Planned CathInfo outage Monday

  • I will be installing/configuring a new router Monday late morning, as well as getting the final (new) Static IP address for my server.
My Internet provider is forcing me to change Static IP addresses. But right now I don't have one at all. When I get a (new) Static IP out of them Monday while talking to their support on the phone, it's going to mean another DNS update. These updates take time, for all computers on the entire Internet to "get the news" about the CathInfo move to a new IP address.

During the transition period (from 2 hours to 36 hours), CathInfo may appear to be down for some.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up. I'm doing my best, but I don't control what my Internet provider does. They're still the best option I have, by far. As is self-hosting in general. In this age of censorship and cancel culture, self-hosting is the only way for a forum that discusses controversial topics. So dealing with my local Internet provider during occasional outages like this is well worth it.

  • Bump!

I'm probably not going to get to everything as soon as I thought -- I have a RIDICULOUSLY BUSY Monday planned.
About 50 things I want to do "first" right now. Can't decide where to begin.

Just want everyone to know WHY and HOW LONG CathInfo will go down today.

Remember you can reach me on that SSPX Resistance Supporters Facebook group.

And for the nerds: Make sure you DON'T have any CathInfo entries in your HOSTS file. I found that our laptop had an entry for CathInfo.com in the hosts file, which surprised me because I thought we wiped (installed from scratch) that laptop a couple years ago. And CathInfo's "old" IP address was in use for many years. Anyhow, it shows the downside of "hacking" your hosts file to get instant update on the new CathInfo IP. You have to remember to remove that setting in a couple days, once the new IP has completely propagated.

Funny, I was thinking that I'd put your new IP in my hosts file so that I wouldn't have to wait for the DNS propagation.

  • Ok, the new IP address is

    198.46.13.253

But if you're reading this, you don't need it :)

Everything should be all set. The new router is up and installed, and everything is working. I tested it this time (by rebooting the router) and it pulled the SAME IP address -- so it's Static now like I'm paying for.

I hate changing IPs, but at least this one is behind me now. Propagation is actually "done" for my other sites -- it's just CathInfo and the server itself that have to propagate now.
