An old fiend of my father has landed in hospice due to a life of heavy drinking. He may not have very long to live. My father is flying out to see him tomorrow mainly to help prevent people from taking advantage of him. I don’t know if he was baptized or any other details except that he is not a religious man. I have been praying for him,but need more advice. If my father can convince him to see a priest should he bring a priest? Are there any other guidelines or norms to follow? Any other prayers that can be offered? Thank you. God bless

Up here in Canada a number of people are praying them daily for someone who has no one to pray for them.
This man needs prayers urgently.

I will pray for the both of them. That they may get better if it for the greater glory of God but also that if is the will of God that they go then that they go in His friendship.

A few thoughts:
1. If your Dad can find a priest, it's best to bring him. (Usually no one comes out of hospice).
2. Along with his missal, bring Holy water, a blessed candle, some Rosaries and a Scapular.
3. Stay with him until the end, praying out load as much as possible.

If worse comes to worse he could always do what happened with Huey Long when he was brought to the hospital after he was shot. the sister asked if he wanted a priest. Huey said, "no sister I am not a Catholic." the sister held his hand while he died and led him in saying a perfect act of contrition.

If he is not baptized, even a lay person can baptize in case of emergency.
When I was a very young teenager, the newspapers in San Francisco told of a young Catholic woman who had baptized a young man who had been attacked by a shark. He died shortly after she baptized him. This occurred in 1959. I doubt if a story like this would be published in the news media today.

Have your father take the bull by the horn, take action, this is not time for diplomacy, have him take a priest with him. It is the way men do things.
The eternal salvation or damnation of your father's best friend hangs upon the action of your father. Have him take a priest and let God sort out the rest. If the person does not accept God's last offer, then it is his problem, your Dad did his part.
