  • They are prehistoric bulls that died out during or slightly after the great flood.

  • Good show.  But the last one died in 1645, I believe.  It amazes me that I never heard of them before.

  • I had no idea that they lived in medievel times. I thought they were more prehistoric like the mammoths or the sabre toothed tigers.

  • I'm amazed you heard of them, Sedetrad.  How did you?  They were HUGE---stood 6' 6" and weighed about 2,000 lbs.  There is a good article on them in Wiki with pictures and everything.  I came across mention of them in a book on prehistoric times.

  • As a teen, I was fascinated with all the animals that are extinct and I also came upon the aurochs in a similiar fashion.

  • So, how many other extinct animals do you know of that I never heard about before?

  • My Polish professor says that in Poland they have an expression "strong as a tur."  Which means strong as an auroch.  So Ursus, in killing the auroch in the arena, was showing his proverbial Polish strength:

Here's a sculpture inspired by the novel Quo Vadis:

  • Very interesting.  For some reason the aurochs have really caught my imagination.  I wasn't that caught up in the Do do.  Maybe because I seem always to have known about them.

  • Trinity,

I have always been fascinated about the idea of a unicorn. The Church uses it as a symbol of Christ so I have always wondered if such wondrous animals lived before the great flood.

  • I haven't read of any confirmation about it from the Saints. Does anyone know of any saints that have confirmed that unicorns did indeed exist?
