There is a cemetery near my home and every morning I see people walking around in there wearing gym clothes. Today I think I seen a woman carrying dumbbells. I don't get what is going on. Their number keeps increasing. It seems like an odd place to be doing your workout. It is not respectful to the dead. What do you think? Am I overreacting?

Dress up in a zombie costume and chase after them. Maybe they won't come around there anymore.

I used to like strolling through the cemetery. I started to carry a rosary in one hand- kept people away from me.

But I agree, going to the cemetery to work out or jog is disrespectful.

I bet some of the women out their in sweat shorts with dumbells are NO nuns.

Maybe people jog in the cemetery because it's the closest thing to a public park in their area? Think! It has roads, grass, trees, flowers, no speeding vehicles driven by texting drivers, fresh air, and it's free! I agree, however, that it is disrespectful. I'd be annoyed if I went to pray and place flowers on my grandma's grave, only to have a bare-chested sweaty man puff past me. :tinfoil:

Here in the UK they keep the grass very well cut and the ground surface is flat (harrowed) so it is a good place to run without risking injury.

Hurdling over the gravestones can be risky though.

Just look at it this way, when he drops dead of a heart attack from running he won't have to go far.

Cementaries, yea, like my father used to say......people just dyin to get in there.

So it looks like I was the only one who read the thread title as Exorcisizing in the Cemetery and was disappointed to discover the thread wasn't about vampires/zombies...

ClarkSmith, I don't believe you are overreacting. I believe it to be disrespectful of the dead and of the loved ones who would visit the cemetery. I was taught when I was young that even walking on the grave was disrespectful and I still believe that. A cemetery is not a park. What is next, frisbee catch with dogs or a picnic?

I don't see it as disrespectful. As long as you are on the roadways and not trampling over headstones or doing something stupid like running by when there is a graveside service going on. I know one cemetery the police use to run radar, eat, or catch a few z's.

Disagree, Peter! A cemetery should not be a place for working out. A quiet, peaceful atmosphere should be maintained, it shouild not be mistaken for Planet Fitness! Taking a leisurely walk would be okay, but jogging, running, barbells and skimpy spandex are wholly inappropriate.

There used to be an old woman at a local graveyard who would take her beach umbrella and a picnic basket, spread out a blanket and spend the day by one of the graves. We all assumed she was "visiting" her husband. So maybe picnics are ok???
