  • Even I can't believe he would be this bold, and say this:

SSPX if this is true, think again.

I would have put this in the crisis area, but he is your pope.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • The "meat" of the story for those like me who don't like to click. : )

    Quote
Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.

“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”

    LOL
It's called "Crisis in the Church", not SV Central. I'm pretty sure this is a cut-and-dried Crisis topic, but will leave it for now.  :cowboy:

  • I haven't been following him since he has been elected, so this was really a surprise when I saw it on Facebook.

But what is even funnier, on the side there is a click to read in July he said he was giving indulgences to those who followed him on Twitter.  Their Purgatory would be reduced.

The good news is, at least he believes in Purgatory.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • The wife made a great point when I told her about this.  An atheist who begins to believe in God sins.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • The average atheist/pagan/what-have-you conscience is more than likely so seared, I don't know how they'd differentiate between their conscience and their emotions.

Most people on this earth have heard of God and they have rejected him. The scriptures and Tradition have been abundantly clear about the consequence of that decision.

If Pope Francis were to cold call me, I would ask him to expound upon his statements on this matter, in hopes that I have misunderstood him. Unfortunately, I don't think I have.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
    ~James 1:27

  • There's another thread on here about this same inanity, and I'll say here what I said there:

So, if your conscience isn't violated by killing babies, carry on?

  • Yes, Francis is very unusual. His comments have been quite strange for a Catholic. No less the Pope.

It's funny that you mentioned Pope Francis  randomly calling people because the only cases I know of where he unequivocally identifies himself as Pope and not Bishop of Rome (or worse, call me Jorge!) were the two times he randomly called Catholics who had written to him.

This type of question is where natural law comes in.

  • But if the pope doesn't have the Catholic faith, or even really believe in God, if he just follows his conscience he's still okay... right?  I mean he isn't making ex cathedra statements so we can just ignore the Vicar of Christ right? Kinda like the embarrassing drunken uncle at the family reunion... right?

Rhetorical question: Does this mean that the 70s are back? Disco and bell bottoms too?

Well, I'm sure someone will be along to explain how all the Church Fathers and Doctors universally taught this, that you don't need to believe in God to see the beatific vision... implicit desire, invincible ignorance, natives trapped on desert islands and so on and so forth.

All these large helpings of cognitive dissonance today are making me puke. First the ex-KGB President of Russia writes an Op-Ed piece in the N(j)ew York Times giving peace and democracy lessons to the Nobel 'Peace Prize' winning, self-proclaimed leader of the free world, Barack Obama... and now this.

It's enough to turn a man to drink
