  • Today I learned something -- something I should have noticed at least 2 years ago.

All the versions of Android have been in alphabetical order.

Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice cream sandwich, Jelly Bean

I've always known that they're named after treats, but I never noticed, until an article pointed it out today, that they're in alphabetical order!

The next version, by the way, is set to be called Kit Kat. (Which is my favorite candy bar.) Apparently they're going to be doing cross-promotion with Hershey's. They're even going to do a Willy Wonka style giveaway.

  • I watch Monty Python sketches from the 1970s and suddenly understand some deeply embedded joke, philosophic or literary reference decades after first seeing the sketch and sometime having listened to it 12 or more times over those years.

For a decade I was under the misconception that reusing tea bags repeatedly could cause blindness because of Donald Pleasance's character in the movie The Great Escape, which I first watched at the impressionable age of 7.

  • Their cross promotion certainly works, at least on me. I had no clue what 'Froyo' was before.

    Me either --

I'm not one for silly made-up words, like "froyo" and "mancation" (pretty much any made up word that involves "man" or "bro")

I think such fake words are stupid.

For one thing, "vacation" is right from the Latin.

Combining an English noun with a latin-derived word is always going to sound incredibly stupid, like "bigify"

Wait til it gets to S.
    For Soylent.

It's cute and all but I'm not being taken in by it.  I don't own a cellphone, too dumb for a smartphone.  The people at Android had a commercial in rotation last year which showed some guy being led to a table by the stereotypical hot geek nurse, strapped to the table, and then subjected to some horrible-to-straight-people-cool-to-techno-geeks cybernetic fusion where he has his phone imbedded into his body, thereby becoming "one" with his gadget.

Perhaps it was a wind-up for the inevitable implant chip.  "See, people?  Ain't it cool to be a machine?"

Original version with Gene Wilder is a good morality tale. As sung by Oompah Loompahs.

(Johnny Depp version to be consigned to the outer darkness and teeth gnashing nosebleed section.)

    2. Truly garbage newwords being introduced into the language....

Tis a descent into barbarism, no matter what modern linguists et al say. Reflects a degenerate culture. Doubleplusungood.

OED is the one for me, and Webster can be flushed down the lavatory.

The counter revolution will be complete when the language is purified.

    3. What about new Mac OS systems?

We have but run out of large cats. Bobcat and Lynx wont work. Ocelot?

    4. Help, help I'm being repressed.
