I had heard of the other story you mentioned. There are a number of alternatives available on the net, but I don't have the technical knowledge, skills, or resources necessary to confirm whether of them are functional or worthwhile. Have you come across anything worth checking out in further detail?

I tend to trust the wisdom of markets. That is, if something is openly sold and without restrictions, it will sell as much then it is useful.
I doubt very much that there is a fantastic solution just waiting to bought on-line. They could however be the bare-bones ideas for future developments.
That being said, there are some alternatives, but they require commitment, as they may end up costing you more and are usually used by people dialed in to environmental concerns.
If you have specifics in mind, please post, I am also curious of all these new technologies.
