  • My sister goes to an independent chapel in California. Our Lady Help of Christians. She just told my wife that she is doing her Easter Mass on Sunday, at 8 pm. I am already uncomfortable with the priest here so I'm a little on edge about it. Can anyone tell me is this appropriate, or if you are familiar with something like this?

  • At an SSPX chapel we have had the Easter Vigil at night-like 9ish if I recall, with the big fire and candles and procession.

But, you will no doubt get a much more expert observation from someone more knowledgeable.

Have a blessed Holy Week, Richard and family. (and all).

  • Thanks Liz and LP.

So it can not (the Holy Saturday mass) fulfill your Sunday obligation, or Easter Obligation, does it?

And a priest cannot give this type of 'dispensation' could he?

  • The Midnight Mass fullfills your Sunday Obligation, You are supposed to go to the Midnight Vigil, the Morning Masses are for those that cannot make it.

  • Strictly speaking, there is no Holy Saturday Mass.

There is a long vigil service, culminating with the Easter Midnight Mass, but no Mass  on Holy Saturday.

While we're talking about Liturgy, I'd like to remind everyone that the Liturgy during Holy Week is second to none, being the most ancient in current usage.

Notice certain "changes" during Holy Thursday Mass? Those aren't changes; you're looking at a time capsule of the Roman Rite Mass before those things were added over the centuries.

And yes, the Church can make small changes to the Liturgy. We "trads" have had a bad experience with the Church changing the Liturgy, but we must realize that under normal circuмstances the Church can add this or that small feature to increase devotion or combat heresy. The Church does have that power.

What the Church can't do is throw out an entire Mass and make a new one up from scratch, using heretical services as a template!

  • My poor memory

We went at 9:00 because our son was supposed to serve, and it went until really late.  I do not think any SSPX chapel offers a Saturday Easter get-out-Sunday-obligation-deal.  I sure hope not!

Some of my Holy Weeks are a blur because the services were really long and frequent.

Matthew's right, Holy Week is second to none.  I humbly pray everyone is participating in this deeply beautiful week.

We used to live in an area where we occasionally attended an Indult Mass which was always at crazy times (not unlike an Easter Sunday mass at 8 pm, lol). This was due to having to work around the schedules of not only the priest, but also the church.
