Earth is bracing for a cosmic tsunami Tuesday night as tons of plasma from a massive solar flare head directly toward the planet.

The Sun's surface erupted early Sunday morning, shooting a wall of ionized atoms directly at Earth, scientists say. It is expected to create a geomagnetic storm and a spectacular light show -- and it could pose a threat to satellites in orbit, as well.

"This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here early in the day on Aug. 4," said Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."

The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, was spotted by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which captures high-definition views of the sun at a variety of wavelengths. SDO was launched in February and peers deep into the layers of the sun, investigating the mysteries of its inner workings.

"We got a beautiful view of this eruption," Golub said. "And there might be more beautiful views to come if it triggers aurorae."

NASA Launches Observatory to Study Sun Views of aurorae are usually associated with Canada and Alaska, but even skywatchers in the northern U.S. mainland are being told they can look toward the north Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for rippling "curtains" of green and red light.

When a coronal mass ejection reaches Earth, solar particles stream down our planet's magnetic field lines toward the poles. In the process, the particles collide with atoms of nitrogen and oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere, which then glow, creating an effect similar to miniature neon signs.

The interaction of the solar particles with our planet's magnetic field has the potential to create geomagnetic storms, or disturbances, in Earth's magnetosphere. And while aurorae are normally visible only at high latitudes, they can light up the sky even at lower latitudes during a geomagnetic storm.

Fortunately for Earth-bound observers, the atmosphere filters out nearly all of the radiation from the solar blast, so the flare shouldn't pose a health hazard, experts say. Pilots and passengers in airplanes may experience increased radiation levels akin to getting an X-ray.

The solar particles also could affect satellites, though scientists think that possibility is remote. Orbital Sciences Corp. believe a similar blast may have knocked its Galaxy 15 satellite permanently out of action this year.

This type of solar event has both government officials and satellite manufacturers worrying.

NASA scientists warned recently that high-energy electric pulses from the sun could cripple our electrical grid for years, causing billions in damages. In fact, the House is so concerned that the Energy and Commerce committee voted unanimously to approve a bill allocating $100 million to protect the energy grid from this rare but potentially devastating occurrence.

The sun's activity usually ebbs and flows on a fairly predictable cycle. Typically, a cycle lasts about 11 years, taking roughly 5.5 years to move from a solar minimum, a period of time when there are few sunspots, to peak at the solar maximum, during which sunspot activity is amplified.

The last solar maximum occurred in 2001. The latest minimum was particularly weak and long- lasting.

The most recent solar eruption is one of the first signs that the sun is waking up -- and heading toward another maximum.

  • Well nothing happened but here is Spokane the air is sort of hazy for some reason, for days now.

    Another interesting happening today:
4 dead, 4 Missing in Indonesia's Volcano Eruption

    Friday, 6 August 2010
Four locals living around Karangetang volcano in Sitaro isles in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province were reportedly missing following an eruption of the volcano earlier Friday morning, an official said on Friday, Xinhua reported

Head of Social Department at North Sulawesi provincial office Recky Tumanduk said that those missing persons were presumably death, adding that the rescue team had found four dead bodies following the eruption.

"Those four dead victims were already evacuated by teams engaged by local administrator. The evacuation had been reported to the governor," Recky was quoted by the state's official news service, Antara, as saying in his office in Manado, the province's capital city. He added the searching efforts over those missing victims were still underway.

Recky said that the eruption in the most active volcano in the area incited panic among the people living in the isles, and made them refuge to places considered safe.

Citing the report, he said that the eruption ransacked five houses, making four people missing, some of them were buried alive under the debris.

No official data was publicized by regional mitigation agency regarding the eruption nor the scale of impact from the eruption.

7.5 Mag Quake Spawns Tsunami in Vanuatu

    Published August 10, 2010
    | Associated Press

Aug. 10: USGS map shows the intensity of shaking from the earthquake, centered just west of Port Vila, Vanuatu, in the South Pacific.

SYDNEY -- Panicked residents of Vanuatu raced for higher ground after a powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific island nation and generated a small tsunami on Tuesday.

The 9-inch wave was observed off the capital Port Vila, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Police said there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries from the wave or the 7.5 magnitude quake that preceded it, though buildings shook and power lines were down.

"It was quite a significant earthquake, and we're still having a few aftershocks," Ben McKenzie of the New Zealand High Commission told The Associated Press by phone from Port Vila.

The quake hit about 25 miles northwest of Port Vila at a depth of 22 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Police spokesman John Frat told the AP that officials had not received any reports of injuries or major damage, but described the temblor as "a very sharp quake -- it was the worst I have felt in my life."

"Many people left the center of town and went to higher places, fearing a tsunami," he said by telephone from Port Vila. "We're still experiencing sharp aftershocks and all communications were lost for a time, but things are coming back to normal now."

The four-story office building housing the New Zealand High Commission suffered some damage, said McKenzie, first secretary at the New Zealand diplomatic post. Office shelves and ceiling tiles fell down and computers were "thrown across the office" by the jolt, he said.

"We're trying to ensure everybody is safe and we're evacuating the building" to check that it's not "structurally damaged," he said.

Joel Pari, a worker at Port Vila's Trading Post newspaper, said they had not heard any reports of injury or major damage following the quake.

"But it was really strong -- it really shook the buildings and everybody fled outside and to higher ground in case of a tsunami," he said.

  • Last night on the History Channel, my husband wanted me to watch about those sun spots that are ejecting from the sun.

What I found so interesting was, the way they explained it, how the earth is protected, that amazed me so much, any one watching that show who still are atheist must have more faith in chance than it takes to believe in God.

  • That just looks like typical liberal, tree-hugger, "we're all gonna die because we drive cars and use plastics" junk. They've always thought the world was dying because of us, and have never ceased to say so (even if they never mention their believed causes in a particular article).

I wouldn't listen to things like that. We have another whole age to get through (the rest of this one, and as far as most people can tell, the age of the Antichrist may be after it), so... I'm not worried about it. Even if you listened to total doomsday scenarios like the ones being spouted by a couple of the people who were talking about the gulf oil crisis... events that would really re-arrange the face of the planet... the planet would still right itself after.

Look at the destruction of a volcano. It's absolute. EVERYTHING burns, and what's left is volcanic ash and volcanic glass. You'd think "there's no way anything could ever grow here again," or "it'll take hundreds of years for things to recover here" ... but it's just not true. From nothing but smoking ash, that area will recover in just a matter of years, and be so lush and alive it will be hard to believe anything ever happened. Remember this world was once TOTALLY FLOODED. Look at it now. Life everywhere.

Yeah, if the disaster is bad enough, our personal chances of surviving may take a nose-dive but... when people start talking about "the end of the world" or "the death of the world" ... it's almost laughable. God... all-knowing, all-wise and all-powerful.... made this world. HE designed it. Do you really think it's likely that He did such a job of it that it would be that easy to wipe it out? Or that if something happened that normally WOULD do so, He couldn't intervene and fix everything if He wanted to? Or save a fraction of humanity if He wants to?

It's hard in the face of so many stories like those, to remember this sometimes, but... we do ultimately have to realize, this world is not NEARLY as fragile as the liberal left is always painting it (I think they've watched too many hollywood movies, personally). This world was made by an infinitely intelligent and infinitely powerful God. I think He can take care of it just fine, in spite of human stupidity (atom bombs, massive oil volcanoes, etc.).
I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi

  • Yes, but it will be destroyed by God personally (by fire, according to the "common opinion" of the mystics), not by the hand of man.

    There is a big difference.

More importantly, it will be destroyed on God's timetable, not the Illuminati's. They have their plan for how they want history to go, but God's plan is totally different. Guess who wins?

  • Actually I don't think the world will be destroyed, but changed.  Not destroyed because Our Lord's blood was shed on this earth, it is an altar now.  I think it will be purified by fire and changed into something that all the souls in heaven can make  pilgrimages  for all eternity.
