  • Hugelkultur -- the German technique of creating a rich growing environment. Just bury a bunch of logs, brush, sticks, etc. with regular soil, add some compost on top, and you have an awesome grow-anything environment good for at least 5 years!

You won't need to water it, fertilize it, or till it during all that time.

I'm going to try this myself, as soon as time permits. Hopefully in the next couple weeks.

  • I should point out -- this is ESPECIALLY useful if you live in the city. You don't need a very big garden, as the soil you amend with Hugelkultur will be more productive. You'll get plenty of tomatoes with just 1 or 2 plants, rather than 8 plants that don't produce as well.

Your garden can be any size you like -- just follow this technique.

I'm a sucker for lost knowledge. Modern man has forgotten how to do everything, from grow food to birth a baby. It's always nice to discover how people used to do things for centuries and millennia.

  • I looked up Sepp Holzer a few years ago.  He is really incredible.

It's nice to see him here, trying to help in this way.  My husband and I are going to try it.

  • Interesting, but there is no dirt in which to bury logs where I live.  As for buying trash, even if you have a small yard, get ready for infestation by roaches, mice, and rats. :farmer:
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

I hear you there. I have a bunch of cut 2L bottles with herbs on my fire escape. It's such a small area!
