  • I found out about this website and was very interested.

Here is the link: DR Bible

I just received in hardcover "The Original and True Rheims New Testament of Anno Domini 1582" as a gift. I immediately opened it and read the first chapter of the Gospel of John and my heart leaped for joy like John the Baptist in the womb. I am looking forward to reading it, starting with the Gospel of John. Does anyone else here have this version of the Bible? I think it is supposed to be the original Douay-Rheims Bible as it was before the revision in the 19th century, except that some of the spellings of words were modernized? If you have this Bible, what do you think of it?
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • Matto,

Yes, I have the same bible. The annotations are great. I posted the annotation to Hebrews 11:6 in a recent thread. It's my favorite bible.

    DR
Rom. 3:25 Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins"

Apoc 17:17 For God hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him: that they give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God be fulfilled.

  • I am glad that it is your favourite Bible, DR. It seems I made a good purchase. The last Bible I bought was a disaster. It was supposed to be the Vulgate, but a few months after I bought it I discovered that it was not really the Vulgate at all but a new translation, I think done by some Germans in the sixties, that they call the Vulgate so people would read it instead of the real Vulgate (there is a third "Vulgate" as well).

  • Matto,

    I. How much did the book cost?
II. Is it in the original antiquarian typeface?

    1. It was kind of expensive, costing about 60 dollars for the New Testament alone in hardcover. It also comes in paperback for less. The Old testament is separate and I think it comes in either two or three volumes.

    2. This is not an exact reprint of the original Rheims New Testament, so it is not in the original antiquarian typeface. The man who prints it made some changes to the original Rheims, I think mostly modernizing the spelling. It is printed in a normal modern font.

  • The Douay-Rheims has been updated a couple times, I think, to modernize spelling... but let's face it... you're not going to loose any depth or understanding if you correct spelling.

I'm all for tradition, but you CAN get ridiculous. When you're staunch about keeping "been" as "beene" or something... that's getting a bit on the absurd side.

There's nothing wrong with the Douay-Rheims. (Unless some idiot typesetting it messes up somehow.) The one TAN printed was trustworthy, at least. (I read it every day, and haven't found any mistakes.)
I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi

But Bishop Challoner modified the original Douay Rheims a great deal, I read somewhere.

  • I do not think that the Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims is a bad Bible. I was just interested in the original Douay-Rheims because I have heard that the revisions were very extensive and that the original is much closer to the Vulgate. The Catholic Encyclopedia article about the Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims says: "The changes introduced by him were so considerable that, according to Cardinal Newman, they "almost amounted to a new translation" . I do like the updated spellings, which I think are very helpful to the modern reader.

One difference I noticed: This Rheims has "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt in us" instead of "dwelt among us", which makes sense because the Latin in the Vulgate is "habitavit in nobis".

Correction: I said above that the Challoner revision was from the 19th century when it is actually from the 18th century. Sorry.

  • We have an old 1789 Bible.

It has a page which says

"The Censure and Approbation of the Univerfity of Rhemes.

(then a paragraph in Latin which is a mystery to me)

    below that-
The  APPROBATION of the Univerfity of DOWAY

more Latin and names and the date 2 Nov. 1599

????  Any Antiqurian Bibliophiles out there ????

  • You are in possession of such a treasure? From the 18th century! That is amazing. That is still a bit modern, but I have nothing compared to that!

Is it in good condition? Wow that must be amazing. The old font on the original paper instead of on a PDF or printed out on modern sheets of white paper.

Old books make my heart beat fast.

Pardon me, but would you consider selling that?

  • It's pretty crusty and dried out.

Is it valuable?  I don't know if it's from our family or not.  If it is an heirloom I would keep it, although conditions here are not archival.

I remeber when I found a 17th Century Jesuit wooden BVM staue in my Father-in-law's BACK YARD!!!  GAH!!  There was an "intervention"!!

I also adore old books, as have my family...I would consider selling it.  I am always sort of afaraid to open it, because it is so old.  For some reason, I used to think it was 400 years old (probably a mistake in reading Roman Numerals)

It is only the New Testament--it begins with St.Matthew.

We just have too much stuff--I wonder if our more modern Douey Bibles are orthodox.

  • If you would consider selling it, I would be interested in knowing the price. I wonder what such a book would be valued at....

If its not an heirloom, you could always make it one!

  • I have no idea how much that old Bible is worth.  I should read more of it, hey?  I like saying the effs for esses!  :dancing:

I'll need to ask my Dad where he got it.  I can also ask him to keep an eye out for old Catholic Bibles for you.
