  • Does anyone live up there in Kansas?

I've been considering a move.  I do radiography (x-ray and CT), so I need to live near populated areas with hospitals.  So far, I've been looking at Topeka and the southwestern edges of Kansas City.

I'm looking for a big cheap house, sorta close to St. Marys.

Most of all, what places should I avoid?

  • Do you want to live where it is cold and the wind never stops?  Do you love snow, sleet, hail, and tornadoes?   Then Kansas is calling young man!

But... Jen51 would vehemently disagree with me, she loves KS!  And to be fair I think Wichita is great city.

If you are not stuck on KS you might consider AZ.  Phoenix is good for people in the medical field since we have LOTS of hospitals.  Housing is fairly reasonable.  The weather is good 8 months out of the year, and if you don't mind being roasted like a goose on a spit you won't mind the summers.

The chapel has its share of problems but I have found it to all be workable, and there are a couple of other traditional options in the valley for those so inclined.

  • What about Texas? Your dollar and purchasing power go incredibly far there. Lots of square feet for very little money. Lots of hospitals and chapels, too.

  • Can't really say I enjoyed living in St. Mary's when I did. Some aspects of it were good, but it is very small.

You definitely need to check it out before you decide to move there.  At least for a few weeks. Topeka is a run-down dump IMO. Manhattan is kind of nice, but it's a college town and rather small. The water in Kansas is really bad. And there are very little trees there, so if you're used to a lot of trees like me, it's kind of meh.

I would move outside of KC before I moved to St. Mary's, KC has a much better economy, a lot more to do there as well and the landscape is better.

  • Saint Mary's is a nice little town, if you like little safe rural towns, then it is great. Plus you go your choice of Trad. masses, SSPX, SAJM/Bishop Zendejas (Emmett) or Fr. Pfifer (Rossville).

For houses contact Kevin Kirby: http://www.smre.info/

But if you need to live closer to Topeka or KC, then visit first to take a look at the neighborhoods as each one if different. If it looks bad, then it is; if it looks nice, then it usually is.

Once your are a resident you can carry a gun without a permit, so enjoy!

  • Iwould really encourage you you to do some thorough homework before moving to St. Mary's. The economy is difficult. I do quite like the area. St. Mary's and the small towns around it are quiet and friendly, but if you are used to living some place more upscale and ritzy, you will probably be displeased with it. The SSPX parish there rubbed me the wrong way the handful of times that I've been there. There is also a FFSP parish right down the road in Mapleton.

Topeka has a pretty high crime rate. I don't enjoy Topeka. Sure, it's the state capital, but I find the whole place depressing and lifeless, despite it's large population.

I lived in Manhattan for several years and I really liked it. There are a lot of scenic opportunities right outside of the city. You do have to deal with the shenanigans that come with it being a college town. Land prices are high there, and housing is not cheap.

Lawrence provides a lot of cultural opportunities, some nice, some wicked. It's the biggest Liberal hotspot in Kansas. Homos galore. Personally you couldn't pay me to move there.

I lived in The Kansas City area for a couple years. It was miserable for me because I am a small town girl, but if you don't mind the City, this is the place I would reccomend. Depending on where you would like to settle in the area, housing costs aren't that bad. Maybe you should check out Bonner Springs or Shawnee.

Marlelar is right, I love Kansas! It does have some interesting weather, but no more interesting than the Tulsa area, IMO. I grew up in North Central Kansas and have a great love for the landscape found on the short grass prairie. There's so much beauty if one is willing to see it! I am currently living about an hour South of Kansas City, and IMO it is the most scenic area in Kansas. It's so green and lush, lots of trees, creeks and small lakes. It also happens to be one of the poorest places in Kansas. Housing is cheap, and many people commute to the city for work. You know, we are looking to move soon, and we will be selling our large house. How about you buy it! Lol.

  • I have visited both the FSSP Mater Dei and Byzantine Catholic St. Basil's in Irving. We stayed with friends in Irving, TX (Dallas-Ft. Worth area). But very expensive area. We were planning to move to B-ham, AL, lots of inexpensive housing and this http://unavocenorthernalabama.com/parishes/

  • Fort Worth, as I looked on Zillow, seems to be really affordable compared to Irving/Dallas. I hope that's not an indicator on the town's safety.

  • A lot of great advice in this thread.  Thanks guys.  I will be investigating your leads in coming weeks.

House prices: let me put it this way.  I paid $55,000 for my house, and unless I am making what I'm making now, I won't be able to afford anything more expensive than that.  Hence the need to move to a large population with hospitals.  There'd be a greater chance for a good-paying job.

I've actually considered Phoenix.  I like the desert.  But it's so radically different from what we're used to.  I'll look into Phoenix as well.

Our options are limited, as we're a single-income family living off of what I make with CT and x-ray work.

Yeah, you're making absolute peanuts. The closer to a big city you can get, if not a condo in the city, the better.

I don't think you'll find anything in that price range in the Phx area, even in the barrio.

I saw those kinds of prices in Topeka, which is one of the reasons I was scouting that town.
A lot of the houses in my neighborhood are between 30,000 and 50,000.
Yay North Tulsa.  (Lived here all my life.)

  • You can use Zillow dot com or Trulia dot com to get some idea of real estate prices in any given area.  They are not totally spot on, but it's a fair guess.
