Not sure if any of you are aware of this group, but they are a volunteer organization that helps prepare public domain texts for uploading to
Project Gutenberg. This helps to make the texts more widely available, and also allows those who are blind to be able to read the books using text-to-speech software. Many of you have likely used Project Gutenberg e-texts, or copies of them at other websites, at one point or another. Many publishers use PG e-texts in order to prepare print editions of books. Thus, making a book available on PG helps to make it more available, both in print and electronic formats.
If you're interested in helping to make more public domain books accessible to a wider audience, feel free to sign up at
Distributed Proofreaders and lend a hand. How it works is that you compare an image of a printed page to an electronic read-out produced by OCR software, and look for errors, typos, etc. Even proofing one page a day goes a long way!
