    Vietnamese:

    ----------

One of my favorite songs of all time (don't worry the lyrics are clean and so are the sites). I would suspect that it is in Japanese, Corean and maybe the language of the Phillipines? It's a really famous song.

I must say that I do like the sound of Chinese. I've heard from people that it is not that hard to learn. I must find some time to teach myself some.

Interestingly Japanese (and maybe Corean?) are atonal as opposed to the tonal Chinese and Vietnamese (Vietnamese has more tones but I have hard time differentiating the tones in Chinese).

Does anyone else speak/read/write an Oriental langauge (actually, I don't even know if I qualify since many Orientals have disdain for Vietnamese langauge and culture and consider it more "south asian" and related to Thai, etc than Oriental. I don't know if its just racism or not, since there is a lot of racism between Chinese/Vietnamese) ?

  • I still know quite a bit of Japanese -- I used to know several hundred Kanji and everything. I still know most of the basic script (hiragana/katakana).

I went for Japanese because I was interested in Anime -- particularly the songs -- at the time. I listened to a lot of J-pop and Anime songs in Japanese. For those unfamiliar, in Japan they have respectable pop songs for intro/exit credits for Anime (cartoon) series. They are aimed more at adults than children.

Japanese is atonal, and it is much easier to learn than Chinese, at least for me. For one thing, Chinese doesn't have a "basic" script like hiragana which is only 46 simple characters, similar to our alphabet. Instead of each standing for a letter, each one stands for a consonant/vowel combination (syllable). You can write *everything* in hiragana only, but you'd look like a 1st grader who doesn't know his Kanji yet :)

  • Japanese also use a Romanized alphabet as well. Chinese doesn't.

I think its an interesting fact that you know how to speak Japanese.

I'm good with languages -- but only if someone is teaching me directly. It is sometimes difficult for me to learn from a book.
