  • According to Wikipedia, the Greek fathers believed in the evil eye.
    Quote
The Greek Fathers accepted the traditional belief in the evil eye, but attributed it to the Devil and envy.

Is it true? If it is true, then did they err?

  • The Fathers were not immune to the scientific misapprehensions of the day.  Even if they did err on this, it was hardly a matter of doctrine.  They didn't know that disease was caused by germs.  That is no reason to call them into question theologically.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • The "evil eye" is not about eye disease. It's metaphysical. It has a spiritual root.

Do they mean before 1054 AD? The Greek schism wasn't formal before then. Which Greek Fathers?

There are dangers out there, and the evil eye is one of them. If you discover an evil eye or are around one, you'll want to get away from it.

  • What makes you think the evil eye isn't real?

    Sincerely,

  • Whether it's real or not, the deadliness of envy would be expected to inspire such beliefs.

What makes you think the evil eye isn't real?

Methinks the evil eye is real and darksome.

Luke 11:34-36 The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, thy body also will be darksome. Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus, si oculus tuus fuerit simplex totum corpus tuum lucidum erit, si autem nequam fuerit etiam corpus tuum tenebrosum erit.

Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. Vide ergo ne lumen quod in te est tenebrae sint.

If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness: the whole shall be lightsome and, as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee. Si ergo corpus tuum totum lucidum fuerit, non habens aliquam partem tenebrarum, erit lucidum totum et sicut lucerna fulgoris inluminabit te .

  • Another good reason to wear your scapular, and remain in the state of grace, resulting in Divine protection.  Have your children blessed by a valid priest whenever possible.
    Please pray for my soul.
