  • I have the impression he never did but went exclusively to the Tridentine Mass but I'm not sure because I haven't read much about him personally.

I ask because I have some Novus Ordo family members who tell me to read things from Una Voce (which i think was founded by Davies) instead of things from those "dreadful sedevacantists", when all the while these family members of mine are full-blown Novus Ordos and only go to the New Mess.

I don't understand how they can tell me to read things from Una Voce (which i think is traditional) when 99% of the beliefs and positions expressed by Una Voce condemn my family members and what they do and believe now.

  • Michael Davies is not completely Traditional. He wrote a good book on Archbishop Lefebvre years ago, but he's by no means a traditionalist.

Others can give you the details.

All I know is a quote from one seminarian about Michael Davies, "He sat on the fence for years, and he ended up falling off."

  • Michael Davies was president of Una Voca, which is not a traditional Mass group, but rather, a group that calls for the Mass to be in Latin.  So, Una Voce, unless they have changed, is in favor of the Novus Ordo in Latin or the traditional Mass.  It just happens that, if you want the Mass to be in Latin, it seems to be easier to get the traditional Mass.

He attended the traditional Mass when it was available to him, but I never heard that he refused to attend the Novus Ordo if that was all that is available to him.  I would agree with the seminarian Matthew quoted.

Mr. Davies died in 2004.  I wonder what he would think of the state of the Conciliar church today.

He mentioned in a talk once how someone was scandalized that he (MD) would not go to the Novus Ordo - i.e. if the only Mass he could find to fulfill his Sunday obligation was the Novus Ordo, he would not go.  And he cited Fr. Vincent Miceli, S.J., on why one is not obligated to go to the Novus Ordo to fulfill the Sunday obligation, even when no other Mass is available.  Which gives me the same impression you have.

I do not have the impression it was founded by him, but he later became its president for a while.

  • This is what then Cardinal Ratzinger said about Michael Davies.

His biography on the International Federation Una Voce'e website.

Davies was not a founder of FIUV but its second President.
"Recent reforms have amply demonstrated that fresh changes in the liturgy could lead to nothing but complete bewilderment on the part of the faithful" Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani

    "Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and Bishop

  • Davies never went to the NO. He even privately wondered if it was valid in the vernacular(due to the "For All" that was used for the consecration of the Precious Blood). He wanted tradition to spread throughout the entire Church, which is why he became president of Una Voce in his later years. However, he wasn't the founder(that was Dietrich Von Hildebrand). I think the previous poster who said Una Voce was for the celebration of either rite in Latin has the organization confused with the Latin Liturgy Association. Una Voce is for the celebration of the TLM, period.

Thank you for the correction.  No, I did not have Una Voce confused with the Latin Liturgy Association (an organization with which I am unfamiliar).  I was told, years ago, by someone who was trying to establish a chapter in the area that Una Voce's mission was simply to encourage the use of Latin in the liturgy.  Apparently, he didn't really know much about Una Voce either.
