You can receive a plenary indulgence today, new years eve, if you recite the 'Te Deum' and fulfill the normal conditions.

You can receive another one on Jan 1 if you say the 'veni creator' and fulfill requirements.

Of course, that is the 1999 conciliar edition of indulgences, which took the previous traditional (Raccolta) phone book sized book of indulgences and whittled it down to the size of a thick pamphlet.  

I have no idea whether the indulgence existed in the former traditional book or not (i.e., I really don't have enough interest to look it up).

Sure, if the pope is the pope, he can abolish 95% of all indulgences, and we can all cheer this one as a great work of mercy (conveniently forgetting the 1000's he canceled).

Far be it from me to encourage people to abstain from the few remaining indulgences available to them, but it rubs me the wrong way to hear my SSPX pastor make reference to it without any mention of the trimming the book of indulgences took by "Saint" JPII, and the choking of grace that scandalous abridgment represented.


And, on top of all that, as one of the comments in the Rorate Coeli article noted: 

"According to the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, the plenary indulgences apply only to public recitation or singing of the hymns. This means that it must be in a church or oratory, and also led by one of the clergy, or carried out by a Religious community in their oratory. The laity who are there present and take part may of course obtain the indulgence. Private recitation is that of any non-cleric or any group of the faithful not noted above."
