  • I was very disappointed in my Cursillo experience two years ago. In my opinion it was very manipulative.

The past couple of weeks they have been promoting the ACTS retreat at churches in my area. I understand it's similar to Cursillo, but was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it, especially if you have been on one.

  • I would stay away from all of that junk. Especially Cursillo. It's all NO man centered and not God centered, and they never speak of the Blessed Virgin.
You never see these people doing real Catholic Action. Seems more like a feel-good social gathering than a religious endeavor. A lot of self promoting testimonies - that's about it. I did it 15 years ago, and even as a NO, I knew something was wrong.

  • I've been to a Cursillo myself. It's very manipulative and they strive to induce a "mountaintop experience."

If people want those "feel good" experiences that's their business, but it's wrong that they don't tell us first what happens there, and suck unsuspecting people in who think it's going to be a beneficial retreat.

I've heard that ACTS is worse.

I would like to compile more information about these retreats so I can make my own handout or pamphlet, and can warn others about what goes on there.

I did a Cursillo many years ago. It was very ecuмenical, though stating it was Catholic based.  I met many non Catholics and for a while after was a protestant my ownself because the whole experience left me confused about the Church.  I think it was just an emotional event, nothing grounded in Catholic Tradition.
Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle. 2Thessalonians 2:15
