    Faithful - no; departed - yes.
    You can pray for the repose of his soul in the event that, for example, he perhaps converted while the croc attacked him.
    But as a Protestant, he has no chance of salvation, and we're forbidden from praying for that.

    • Still on crocodiles, once I worked at a respite centre and was caring for Chrissy, a mentally retarded teenage girl, while her parents took a weekend break and went camping and fishing. The girls father was taken by a crocodile. Very sad and tragic!

    The dogma is to be understood the way the Church understands it. We've done this  twice before. You have no clue where that man ended up. Don't make judgments you're not qualified to make.  God is our judge, not random laymen

    Correct.  Neil made allowance for that, just saying that we cannot pray for a Protestant AS Protestant, but only in so far as he may have become Catholic before he died.  That's why I asked which part of what Neil wrote was "ridiculous".  If he's saying that a Prot as Prot can be saved, then he's a heretic.  Nor is this about judging any particular soul; only God knows what transpired between Him and the soul before he finally passed away.  It's about upholding basic Catholic teaching rather than constantly undermining it and calling it "ridiculous".

    I agree.  I know that many Catholics continue to pray after the death of a non-Catholic in the hopes that their post-death prayers help in this pre-death conversion (because God works outside of time), but that does not seem to be what these other posters are suggesting.
