A convicted criminal who was serving out his sentence in a monastery has escaped for the second time and asked to be sent back to prison because life was too tough.

Thief David Catalano, 31, was sent to a Santa Maria degli Angeli community run by Capuchin monks in Sicily last November.

But he found their austere lifetstyle too tough to handle and soon escaped. After a short while on the run he was caught by police and sent back.

Ahh; sometimes true Catholics trying to live saintly lives feel that we are lazy and soft, and that we are doing nothing. This illustrates how we can look to secular persons. We can grow in holiness and self mortification by continuing to try. After a while, it can be surprising how different we are from pagans, and how much more spare in our lifestyles, even compared to prison inmates. Those monks probably thought the convict would feel he was having it easy. RCG:farmer:

Good morning,

When I first saw this story the other day I laughed quite a bit. I can picture in my mind the criminal running away and begging to go back to prison rather than stay with the monks. “Noooooooo……. Not back to the monks…..”

At the same time, however, it helps to remind me that living a life open to God and His will can be very difficult in the secular world in which most of us live and function.

We are no alone in our struggles. We are joined by God, the Angels, the blessed who have gone before us, and our earthly spiritual community.

God bless each of us as we follow the will of God. May we be strengthened in times of struggle and never give up. And, may we begin again when we fall, mindful of the fact that God is always ready for us to return to Him.
