  • Is May 21st the end of the world?

    DENVER—
It’s just about the biggest, boldest prediction anyone could make. But the 89 year old minister behind the May 21st doomsday campaign says he has no doubt that the world is ending in two days.

Believers of this biblical prediction have quit their jobs to prepare for the world’s end. Skeptics say it’s just another bogus prophecy.

According to Boulder native and Internet preacher, Harold Camping, May 21st, this Saturday is the end.

“Then the whole universe is going to be destroyed by fire," says Camping in a network interview.

Camping created a formula based on bible verses to calculate the day the world ends.

“He uses rather sophisticated mathematical equations that are tied to one date.. the date of the flood from Noah’s Ark,” says history professor, Matthew Makley at Metropolitan State College of Denver.

Camping’s faithful followers took it from there, traveling the country, spreading the word.

“There's going to be a worldwide earthquake and what's going to happen is the graves are going to open up, the dead and Christ are going to rise first," says one of his many followers.

“There have been at least 100 predictions tied to the end of the world or the apocalypse,” Makley challenges Camping’s accuracy.  “He admitted at the time that his numbers weren’t entirely precise but this time he`s sure that his numbers add up,” he adds.

So why do we keep hearing these types of predictions? Makley says its’ the human desire to know exactly when the end might be that fuels our obsession with the apocalypse.

  • What could one more expect from an ape of the Church? The very reason for the existance of protestantism is to make a caricature of the faith.

  • Actually if you google this, what they are saying is, Saturday will be their RAPTURE, not the end of the world, that happens later.

So if this rapture theory is correct, maybe WE will all take a flight into the heavens.

Just kidding of course, yet we do agree that it is the Traditional Catholics that are the true Christians.

On a note:  People are walking the streets of Spokane with big banners, May 21, doomsday signs.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • Catholics believe in strange things too, like the chastisement and the three days of darkness and the coming of the great monarch, so  I don't think we should make fun of these protestants too much. Also, one time in the future, the people who predict the end of the world will be correct.

I read a brief interview with him last night that suggested the destruction of earth on May 21. He also doesn't belive in Hell and says the references to it in Scripture are a mistranslation of "grave".

Sorry, but believing in the three days of darkness isn't strange. It will be an actual event.

  • I consider it more frieghtening though at the same time necessary than strange.

Yes, but we don't go around setting exact dates, putting up billboards and other forms of advertisement, and then saying that scripture guarantees the end of the world on some specific date. Besides, our views of the great chastisement and the end-times are passed down from the Saints; this fellow made up his calculation in the last couple of years
    Pray for me, always.

  • Is there any idea how widespread this belief is?  Or is it just some pumped-up media social engineering episode?

  • Lets face it, it will be the end of the world for all those who die tommorow, may God have mercy on thier souls.  Even right now thousands of people are leaving this earth.

This guy said today, after tomorrow the world will not be the same as we know it,  well that sounds like good news to me, since as a traditional Catholic I am not exactly happy with the world as it is today.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • What's interesting is that not all Protestants believe it will be tomorrow. Heck, my Protestant dad doesn't even believe in the rapture, surprisingly.

Christians are insulted all over the world because of what prots do. You can't imagine how many times I have to hear words like:" your religion allows nud-ity, same sex marriage, opperssion of nations, and all types of corruptions." or " liberalism and irreligion are fruits of christianity."
