  • Lauds

    Low Mass

     Solemn High Mass

    Sext

    Vespers and Benediction

     Compline

Could a person participate in more than one in a single day?

    Thanks! :-)

  • Good questions, Penitent Woman.

A newbie, or someone just coming over from the novus ordo would need those terms explained to them.

    Add these terms:

    Roman Canon

    Offertory

    Secret

    Gradual

  • Hi PW,

Lauds, Sext, and Compline are part of the Divine Liturgy of the Hours, which is the Church's prayer.

Reading a little here below might be helpful in explaining it in greater detail, and I'm sure there are many good resources online that explain it too.

I should add, you can get most all of the Breviary prayers here

  • PW, I highly recommend the book "The Latin Mass Explained", by Msgr. George Moorman.  It is by far the easiest to understand explanation I've read, and is not a long read.  Absolutely excellent!

You can get it here at Amazon which will help Matthew and this site  : )

  • I found this here which takes you step by step through High Mass.

They also have a video link you can click on to watch it.

    Latin Mass instructions

p.s. disclaimer, IMHO I wouldn't recommend going to the forum on Fisheaters, but their main page contains a lot of very good and helpful information.  I'll include the link below.  That should keep you busy for a good long while  : )

    Guide to Catholic Traditions

by the way, the terms Capt McQuiqg posted above can also be found in the above link, on the left side under "The Sacrifice of the Mass".  Enjoy!

The instructions from fisheaters were a good breakdown. Would it be bad to print myself a little cheat sheet to bring with?  I've watched several TLM on the computer but I still feel lost.

Also, random question, should a baby's head be covered? We have been practicing and she doesn't keep anything on for very long.

Since I have been going to traditional Mass, I have always covered my baby girl's heads.

One of my daughters was 18 months old when we first starting going and I bought hats for her.  She adjusted pretty well.  Whenever she would take it off, I would put it back on, look her in the eye, and tell her she needed to wear her hat because it made Jesus happy.  It took a little while, but she finally got it.

Our youngest daughter has been wearing a hat or bonnet since birth.  Now that she is almost 2, she started taking off her hat.  But I tell her the same as I told my other and she is okay.

It just takes practice and consistency.  She will get it.

My oldest daughter has never had a problem wearing a veil.

I know some little babies aren't covered and no one seems to bother about it, so I don't know if it is a requirement, but I think it's good practice.  They get used to it faster.

It's funny because she keeps her sun hat on, but I guess that is because she knows she gets to go outside. :)

We are done practicing for the moment. She sees the bonnet and crawls away giggling.

  • In general you can go to as many masses as you would like in a single day. However, you can only recieve communion twice. The second time, you must attend the mass at which you recieve Holy communion.

  • Excuse me, but I think you can go to more than one Mass but can only receive Communion once in a day.  Is receiving twice a NO thing?
