  • I don't know if "band" would be the correct word. The thing is, the Novus Ordo Via Crucis' I have seen are always accompanied with drums and trumpets and maybe something else, I'm not sure. The music is always sad and somber, never happy of course! But I wonder if this is how it was done pre-V2 as well, or if there was no accompanying instrument at all.

What about the ones done by traditionalists? I have never seen one.

  • Pre Vat II I attended the Stations with the whole school on Fridays at 3 PM then when older at 7 Pm.  Both had an organist for the opening hymn, Thy Slayers Dear Jesus then the Stabat Mater between each station.
Of course the organist was a nun.
Never were there any other instruments.

FYI back then after every Mass there would be people making the stations year 'round as it is the most highly indulgenced devotion the church has ever had.
To make the stations individually, all that is required is that you WALK the stations meditating on the Passion of Our Lord.  No prayers are required and they can be made in 2 minutes.
"Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]

That's interesting. Where were the stations done?

Over here (Central America), what they do is the priest leads the people and they do it on the streets of whatever town the church is located. The stations are set up outside selected houses. Then a band of lay people follows around with the instruments, playing everytime they start moving till they stop at the next station.

There's no organ, of course, and I don't know if they use the Stabat Mater.

  • The stations were done in every Canadian church that I know of.
As the church was usually very full, the priest, and 3 altar boys (one carrying the processional crucifix and the other 2 carrying candles) processed from station to station.

Also, after the opening hymn, the priest knelt at the altar steps and the whole congregation said the act of contrition before starting the stations as is required in the Raccolta. (you have to be in a state of grace to receive the indulgences)

  • I'm sure they were, especially, in smaller towns and ethnic suburbs, and the streets of Rome where the commemorating Churches stood.
