  • Hello everyone,

I'm not too familiar with the Galileo affair so I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following claim:

    Quote
Copernicus delayed the publication of his book until after his death in order to avoid being labeled a heretic and endure Church persecution. Galileo was brought before the Church, forced to recant his claims under threat of torture and spent the last four years of his life under house arrest.

Is it true that Pope Paul V, Pope Urban VIII and Pope Alexander VII officially declared that heliocentrism is opposed to Sacred Scripture, and condemned the notion that heliocentrism was a truth to be believed with certainty? Because this is what ScriptureCatholic.com, which favors Geocentrism, says.

I like John Salza and his website.  Here is the link to the referenced site.

I hope we can have an intelligent discussion
(please reference facts, quotes, etc.) on this because I too am not familiar enough with the "Galileo controversy".

  • Anything I could add to this discussion has been posted in the past. 'Heliocentrism' is NOT the idea that the Earth and the planets rev around the Sun. 'Heliocentrism' is the false belief that the sun is the center of the Universe.

From the point of view of someone writng the early scriptures from his location on Earth, it seems as if the Earth is stationary and does not move. Science has shown this to be incorrect. The idea that the Earth rev around the Sun is used in the Pruthenic tables of Copernicus. These calculations are used in the computation of the Gregorian Calendar of the Roman Church and one who says the Earth is stationary is in contradiction to the declaration of that Calendar by Pope Gregory.

  • The state of scientific knowledge at the time of Galileo did not provide for a conception that the Sun and Earth are BOTH in motion.

There is no Biblical Scripture that says the Sun rev around the Earth.

  • Mr Salza himself confuses what heliocentrism is. At one point he describes it as the Earth and other planets revolving around the Sun and in another he has the correct interpretation that it means the Sun to be the center of the universe.  It cannot be both. Copernicus, Clavius, Gregory, Bellarmine and Galileo simply could not conceive of the idea that the Sun and Earth are BOTH  in motion and they also had no conception of a Solar system which only starts to be recognised after Newton and Bradley.

  • Believing that Sun rev around the Earth is a perfect example of the Prot Sola Scriptura heresy.
