  • hi everyone, I'm new to the internet + forums this is my 1st post. I'm looking for some advice and opinions,  last june 2014 my husband + I attended our 1st catholic mass after the mass some lovely kind and helpful people introduced us to the father :-) he was very nice + asked us a few questions, we stated our intentions to be catholic, the father took our details and said we were welcome to come to mass + he would get intouch when rcia was due to start saidaround august september time. september came and went with my husband and I attending every Sunday mass, a friend from church at that point inquired to the father about rcia classes on behalve of us, I suffer from anxiety + find it hard 2approach people, our friend told us that the father said we were doing the best thing and learning by attending mass weekly :-) time has went on with the father never speaking to us but when friends we have made at church asked about rcia he said we would arrange something, before christmas the father spoke to us when leaving mass and said we will meet up for that chat I've not forgotten about us. we were pleases to hear this :-) now its february + all our friends + us in church are finding it strange there is still no rcia classes. today at mass a nice couple told us they said to the father a few weeks ago they would run us through rcia classes as they have all the learning materails as they used to teach the rcia at the parish+ still nothing. my husband and I were under the impression we would be made catholic at the easter vigil having attended every mass from june 2014 till now and on to the easter vigil, + the fact we made our intentions clear in june. we have been reading our gospel + learnt + praying our rosary also researching calendar + obligaation event etc in preparation to become catholic at this years vigil. today after mass the father approached us and ask our situation , asked if either of us were catholic, we answered no, he then asked are yous interested in joining the parish and becoming catholic , we were some what suprised as we had the same conversation last june, but we both said yes we want to become catholic and he then said we will have a talk after easter as they is classes that need to be taken - meaning were not going to be made catholic at this year easter vigil I'll be easter 2016, we feel let down and as though we were left in the dark by our priest. I'm very upset disappionted and confused. can you please leave your thoughts on this or advice on what we should do next.  thank u and sorry for the long post :-)

  • It sounds like you have stumbled into a novus ordo "catholic" church, not a true Catholic Church.  NO (novus ordo) churches are quasi-protestant churches regarding their doctrine and dogma.  They have corrupted and watered down the true faith and do not posses it as handed down through the past 2000 years, a fact they will vehemently deny.

If you truly want to be Catholic, you will need to find a traditional Catholic church.  For a start see if there is a SSPX chapel in your area. (sspx.org)  Although the SSPX has its own set of problems their Masses and other sacraments are valid, unlike the questionable sacraments done by the NO.  You could also check the CMRI (cmri.org), again, their sacraments are valid however some object to them because their are sedevacantist (they do not believe we have had a valid Pope since the death of Pius XII).

Here is a link to a must-read book on the true faith.  My Catholic Faith

I'm sure others will chime in with their two cents.

  • Welcome. This is a traditional Catholic forum. What that means is that most of us here attend the traditional Latin Mass and not the new Mass. They introduced a new Mass a few decades ago and most of us think it is bad so we go to the older traditional Mass instead. Most of us also reject Vatican II and the changes that followed it. That was a council in the sixties that changed everything around. So we believe in the old faith as it was before the sixties and go to the old Mass where they do it traditionally. There are a few groups of priests who say the old Mass and believe in the old traditional faith and reject the New Mass and Vatican II. The largest group is called the Society of Saint Pius X or the SSPX. There is also a group called the CMRI and another group called the SSPV which in addition to celebrating the old Mass and rejecting Vatican II, also reject the last few popes since the council as antipopes. There are also traditional priests who are independent of these groups. It is a little confusing. I would suggest you look into the traditional Catholic faith which you will not be taught at your local RCIA which teaches the new Vatican II faith (There is a lot of information on the internet) and look into one of the groups mentioned here.
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • I can understand your frustration about the priest not getting back to you about the RCIA, or when you can convert, or start the conversion process. I had a similar problem when I initially decided to convert though a novus ordo parish. The priest never got back to me about joining the RCIA class. Since I was interested and drawn to the Latin Mass anyway, I decided to convert through an SSPX chapel instead. With the SSPX (and the FSSP), there's no RCIA class. It's just a one-on-one meeting with the priest to receive instruction (which takes about six months or so, depending on how much time the priest has to meet with you). And it can be done at any time of the year, if I recall correctly. Hope this helps.

  • I forget to mention that if you convert through the SSPX or FSSP, you'll actually be given a proper instruction about the Catholic Faith. It's unlikely that you'll receive proper instruction at a Novus Ordo parish.

  • OP talked about her husband in the first post. Some use the words interchangeably.

Actually the OP said "husband," but nothing indicates whether the OP is a "her."

    Thank *you* for clarifying.

You'd think we wouldn't have to, with a name like cathinfo, people in immoral relationships or transgender people etc wouldn't come here insisting on the sacraments, but well, it's apparently not something we can always assume.

I was wondering when I caught "partner" that *maybe* that was the issue with your not being put into RCIA in a timely manner i.e. maybe this was a gαy couple and the priest didn't want to confront the issue with receiving the sacraments and wad just stalling.

Now that that's been clarified, the priest is either quite old (and thus, forgetful/demented)-- priests are quite an old lot outside of the traditional parishes and seminaries, or just doesn't take the issue of converts very seriously.

These NO priests will often be more into putting together a meditation group or a social justice discussion group than getting catechesis going-- especially if they believe you would be just fine to go to a Lutheran or Buddhist or Unitarian church, them being all paths to God and all.
