  • Daughter's Confirmation is on a Friday night at an FSSP parish.  The food afterward is going to be a light soup dinner (no meat).

My question is: is there a usual Confirmation Mass in the Traditional Rite that would be said whether or not it fell on a Friday night?

Or, is there a difference from say a Sunday afternoon versus a Friday evening?  Basic question: high Mass or low Mass ?

Pardon any ignorance my question betrays here, I'm new to the Traditional Rite.

    God Bless,
    MrsZ

  • A priest can say a high or low Mass any day of the week.

In normal times, Mass is supposed to be said before 3 PM (I might be wrong on the precise hour), but nowadays that's not always possible. Most priests have a "Mass circuit" they have to travel to bring Mass to several groups each Sunday.

  • Thank you for your response, and congratulations.

We're looking forward to this lovely event, not only because of it's significance in our daughter's life as a Catholic, but also because our family is either liberal Novus Ordo, atheist or neo-pagan.  This should be an "experience" for them!

Obviously, through the power of the Holy Spirit (i.e. Ghost), we hope and pray for conversions ... and who knows?  This event may just be instrumental is bringing about such a thing.

    God Bless,

I made my Confirmation on a Thursday night and that was before the Church fell apart.  If I remember correctly, it was a common thing back then.  First Holy Communion was on a Saturday morning; confirmations were on a weekday night.

  • That's interesting :)

So was it a "High Mass" ?  Or am I incorrect in trying to identify the Confirmation Mass as either High or Low?

Our son's Confirmation 2 years ago and mine 10 years ago were both in the Novus Ordo Rite and I don't remember anything different in the Mass itself.

I thought that maybe the Traditional Rite might be a High Mass normally, but that on a Friday night in keeping with the penitential spirit of the day, that might be reduced.

Again, I feel I must apologize for my ignorance in this matter.

    God Bless,

  • I think that I know what church you are talking about. Do you want me to ask one of the priests?

  • You can have either a low or high Mass even if it's on a Friday. Our chapel had a High Mass for the Feast of St. Joseph a few weeks ago (on a Friday during Lent). The meal afterward was meatless and dessertless, but it was a High Mass.

We also usually do a High Mass for Confirmations no matter when they take place. It generally has more to do with wether or not a sufficient number of choir members and altar servers are able to attend the mid-week service.

Oh that parish has no shortage of choir members and altar servers....  :smirk:

  • Thank you both for your helpful responses.

I got a "bright idea" and sent an email to the lady who is organizing things and I should be hearing from her soon.

I read that it could be just a Confirmation service or one within a Mass .... the information that it could be either a High or Low Mass is helpful.

So, now it's just a matter of getting a reply, and my need to know the details will be satisfied!

    God Bless,
