  • All this talk about pre-Vatican II has got me thinking about the sacraments.  Am I correct in remembering that we recieved our first communion before we were initiated into the sacrament of confession or the other way around?  I can't even remember when I learned to go to confession was it Grade 5 (10 years old)?

  • If they do what they were supposed to do then they initiated you into the sacrament of Confession before First Communion.

I could not remember that.  So I would of received the sacraments of baptism, confession (reconciliation) and my First Holy Communion in the old rite.  Poche do you remember what age we should of been to be confirmed by our Bishop?

    Thanks

  • If it was after Pius X, one would make their first confession around the age of 7 or 8, followed immediately by First Holy Communion.

I think customarily confirmation would occur between 10-15, but there's more of a variable here.  It depends on the availability of the bishop.

In the East, infants are baptized, confirmed and given their First Holy Communion.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • It's been the custom the last century or so, in the West, for children aged about 7 to have their first Confession, and the first Communion shortly thereafter.  Confirmation would then occur a few years after that.

There is no divine rule to the order of these Sacraments, however.  As someone else already mentioned, it is the practice in the East for infants to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion all at once.  Additionally, in the past, in the West, children often received Confirmation before first Communion.

The important thing is that if first Communion (and Confirmation for that matter) is given to someone who is above the age of reason, they should go to Confession first so that they are not in mortal sin when receiving.

  • When I was a child we received our first Communion in first grade, and Confirmation in 2nd grade.  We made our first Confession the week before Communion.

I grew up in New York.  I made my First Communion in 1969 and first confession in 1971. I was invalidly confirmed without confession in 1976.  I did not make another confession until 2005.  I had no understanding of the most basic catechism because I wasn't taught the Catholic religion.  What little teaching I received consisted of pop psychology, political correctness, and making hoaky banners out felt, ric-rac, and burlap.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

PIUS Xth!  Yes Mithrandylan, my sacramental life started well after 1914 :)  I am thinking that going to confession first made sense, but I don't remember doing that...I have to talk to our church to see what year I recieved my First Communion...hmmm...But I was confirmed in 1967 ish...so the others must of come first.

Interesting...I have not thought about these dates and experiences like forever :)

Thank you Dolores, your response is consistent with what I am getting from other posters...

But the pattern in the order of the sacraments seems consistent with my experience and others...neat eh.
