COMING SOON - A new CathInfo!

  • CathInfo will be upgraded to new software very soon.

I have been working on the project all week, and all the difficult parts of the transition have been worked out and completed.

I just have a few more things to do, and then I can give everyone a preview of what the new site will look like!

Hopefully I can show off the new site as early as tonight (late).

Old site: Heavily customized version of Mercuryboard (circa 2006).
New site: Decently modded and customized version of SimpleMachines Forum (circa 2017)

    Stay tuned!

P.S. The new site will have all the members, topics, posts, and private messages of the current site. The Likes/dislikes/rep score will be carried over as well. Any currently banned members will still be banned.

Each member will still have the same avatar, signature, e-mail, password, etc.

I'm trying to preserve as much as possible.

And let's not forget: a ton of features that users have come to expect from online message boards in 2017. For example, a WYSIWYG (Microsoft Word-like) Posts editor! That didn't even come with the standard SMF install; I had to pay extra for that commercial plug-in.

The only minor data not being preserved are: the ignores, and the "buddy lists". Those features aren't used much anyhow.

The new site will still have an Anonymous subforum, Mens & Womens private subforums, etc.

These features took some work to achieve (the Mens/Womens forum I had to program by hand) but I'm almost there!

The URLs for each post are going to be very human-friendly, but there is no way to do a conversion from the Old to the New.

    OLD:
    http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php/Bishop-Zendejas

    NEW:
    http://www.cathinfo.com/sspx-resistance-news/bishop-zendejas/30/

The "30" means "start at post #30".

    For the tech nerds:
I don't think it would be feasible for Apache to be able to look up the subforum name for a given post. The redirects are done by Apache (in .htaccess), so it's not a simple lookup to tag on the "sspx-resistance-news".

I think Google will quickly index all the recent/relevant posts on the new site. Any old links will still lead you to the "homepage" or the index page of the subforum, if any. So it's not like the links will be totally broken.

  • That's excellent news. SMF is the place to be.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

"Out of the box" I thought it was just OK, but now that Matthew has made it more CathInfo-esque, I rather like what I've seen of it.

    A good mix of new-and-improved with tried-and-true.

  • Still getting ready...

Unfortunately I still have things like lawn mowing to do. As soon as I'm done with my Saturday errands, I hope to finish up this evening.

Okay, just to be clear, are our private messages going to be deleted?  I got a bunch of stuff I'm still referring to.  Did you mean the private message feature will continue to exist, or did you mean we will still retain all our private messages?

    The upgrade sounds great!

What would you do if your son or daughter after catechism class brazenly stated he/she would not believe something in the Baltimore Catechism?

Well even some of those who believe in BOD do not accept the teachings of the Baltimore Catechism. The catechism says there is a BOD, but it says BOD is an "ardent wish to receive Baptism and to do all that God has ordained for our salvation". Many people believe people can get BOD without having an "ardent wish" for baptism if they are ignorant. And the Catechism says that BOD produces the effects of Baptism of Water, but some who believe in BOD think it can save but that it does not give the Baptismal character or forgive all punishment due to sin so that souls who have BOD can go to purgatory. Are these people not believing something in the Baltimore Catechism?

I believe in BOD myself, but there is one thing in the Baltimore Catechism which I do not agree with, though it is not important. It says God no longer communicates with people through their dreams. But I disagree with this and think God still does communicate with people in dreams as is recorded in the Bible and as happened to saints such as most famously, Saint John Bosco.

Please pray for the repose of my soul.

Please quote it. Does it really say it no longer happens?

    ;
    It's in Lesson 30
"A. God did frequently in the Old Law make use of dreams as a means of making known His Will; but on such occasions He always gave proof that what He made known was not a mere dream, but rather a revelation or inspiration. He no longer makes use of such means, for He now makes known His will through the inspiration of His Church."

I think it's fairly obvious that the catechism is referring to dreams that become a sort of public revelation, such as Joseph's.

And the catechism is right, God's will is NOT publicly disseminated through seers, however legitimate. Even they must be vetted by the Church.

I disagree with your interpretation but as I said it is not that important a question. It does not say God does not use dreams as a means of public revelation which of course ceased with the death of the last apostle. It just says he no longer uses dreams to make his will known, such as in private revelations.

  • Enough about Feeneyism in the General Discussion forum, or I'm going to move this thread there and start over again!

To answer your question, Laramie, yes I'm going to preserve as much as possible, including the existing PMs.

Giving up ANY content is automatically a downside, and I want to limit downsides as much as possible.

I know it's sometimes said that every thread can be turned into a discussion of either SVism or BOD.  Here I am reading a thread about a technical/computer issue, and it happened again.

Did this post somehow get imported from another thread???

ETA: Post written before I saw Matthew's post above.
But my head is still reeling how that happened in a thread about a computer techie-thing.

  • A good mix of new-and-improved with tried-and-true.
"He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure newthings and old."
    [Matthew 13:52]
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi
