  • I am cleaning the Communion paten we use at the chapel and I'm not sure what material is generally used for the top. The bottom is either brass or copper. Are the tops typically gold plated due to the sacred host possibly touching it? If so, what special cleaning or polish, if any, can be used on the gold surface? I have a brass and copper cleaner which I'm not sure is ok with gold.

    Any ideas?

  • We were taught that they must be gold or silver plated on the top.   I would probably use soap and water, unless it is silver and tarnished. Gold and Silver polish do thin the leafing, which could compromise the surface.
I am not alone, for the father is with me.

  • Gold won't tarnish.

It's surprising the bottom of it is not also plated.

Don't rub the the gold part with polish.

IF you've never used it, you will be amazed.

We used to use it for the patten, Ciborium, Chalice, Candelabra, Thurible etc.

It's cheap, safe and works like you can't believe nearly every time.

Surprisingly enough, it almost always works like the commercial and will depend on how tarnished the patten is - but I think you'll be surprised how well it works:
