  • I find it idiotic for anyone in our day to be a cigarette smoker. Cigarettes cost a mint, like burning money, and cause cancer, even more money lost in the future. Plus smokers breath is a horrendous turn-off.

It seems like  practically all the boys that come back from the SSPX's St. Mary's Academy, are all smokers, and dress like all the other young men their age, like slobs, unshaven, uncombed, pants hanging down their hips.

Looks to me like these "traditionalists" smokers are just sheeple, letting themselves be  caught and fleeced.

Every smoker I talk to, agrees with me, but they continue to smoke. Seems to me that it is rare to find a person that is on the lookout to improve themselves, they'd rather just stay as they are.

  • Well, when in the near future (2013 I suppose) we'll again have to stand in the trench for hours or rather for nights, we'll happily smoke Cigarettes  in order to shoo the nasty little insects.

So then we will be "Cigarette smoking Trads" ? :-)

P.S. Until then only a pipe smoker however...

On a related note, you have the phenomena of the early-stage alcoholics hiding behind the excuse, "We're Catholics, not Baptists! Hey, Our Lord changed water into wine at Cana!"

The men I'm talking about are invariably worldly as well. It's as if their main reason for being Catholic is, "Smoking and drinking are allowed. They're not a sin!"

  • There is no good reason to smoke cigarettes for all the reasons you mentioned.  However, being an addict means that you can agree logically with those reasons and still be physically unable to quit.  Some people have it worse than others.  The younger a person is when they start, the more likely they will be completely addicted and be unable to quit.

My H has been smoking since he was a teenager.  His mother smoked in the house while he was growing up, and probably smoked while she was pregnant with him and his 3 younger siblings.  My father smoked cigarettes as well.  He smoked in the house while I was growing up.  I have never been a smoker (I tried it when I was 18, and hated it).

Ironically, my H's mother quit smoking about 15 years ago after spending decades chain smoking...my only conclusion is that because she's also been on prescription psychotropic drugs for her entire adult life, that offset any "loss" she may have otherwise felt going off cigarettes.

I've read that cigarettes have an anti-depressant function, and considering how my H was raised and by whom, I don't doubt they have that effect for him.

I pray all the time that my H will be able to quit someday.  But accept that I may in fact be providing nursing care at some point due to illness caused by his addiction.  "In sickness and in health..."

  • I was a smoker for several years before I converted, for about 2 years afterward, and I quit mainly for health reasons.  In theory, I have no particular problem with someone using tobacco in moderation any more than I do with someone having a drink.  In practice, smoking is a disgusting habit, as are all methods of tobacco consumption to which I've been exposed.

  • I too smoke a pipe from time to time.  Dirty but sometimes helpful for concentration.

That's nice, and I'm not surprised you do that.

I think pipe smokers can be very manly.
Also our beloved Sanct Pius X was a pipe smoker.

P.S. Unfortunately the Cathinfo forum has no smilies for pipe smokers.  :scratchchin:

I was told, some years ago, by a trad priest, that it's ok to have a small vice (like smoking), and that people who don't often have a serious vice in their closet.

As Adam Ant sang: "Don't drink, don't smoke? What do you do?"

     :dancing:

(I don't smoke, but I drink in moderation.)

  • Tobacco is a gift of God that should be enjoyed in moderation.  If the form of tobacco is the cigarette, what's the problem ?  And why is being clean-shaven a virtue ?  I know that this was the custom during the mid-XXth century for some strange reason, but it seems clear that Christian men should have beards and that being clean-shaven is for the malakoi.  Hear these beautiful words :

"But for one who is a man to comb himself and shave himself with a razor, for the sake of fine effect, to arrange his hair at the looking-glass, to shave his cheeks, pluck hairs out of them, and smooth them, how womanly! And, in truth, unless you saw them naked, you would suppose them to be women... For God wished women to be smooth, and rejoice in their locks alone growing spontaneously, as a horse in his mane; but has adorned man, like the lions, with a beard, and endowed him, as an attribute of manhood, with shaggy breasts, a sign his of strength and rule... This, then, the mark of the man, the beard, by which he is seen to be a man, is older than Eve, and is the token of the superior nature. In this God deemed it right that he should excel, and dispersed hair over man's whole body...

...It is therefore impious to desecrate the symbol of manhood, hairiness. But the embellishment of smoothing (for I am warned by the Word), if it is to attract men, is the act of an effeminate person, if to attract women, is the act of an adulterer; and both must be driven as far as possible from our society... "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered," says the Lord; those on the chin, too, are numbered, and those on the whole body. There must be therefore no plucking out, contrary to God's appointment, which has counted them in according to His will… For it is not lawful to pluck out the beard, man's natural and noble ornament...

...But let the chin have the hair… For an ample beard suffices for men. And if one, too, shave a part of his beard, it must not be made entirely bare, for this is a disgraceful sight. The shaving of the chin to the skin is reprehensible, approaching to plucking out the hair and smoothing. For instance, thus the Psalmist, delighted with the hair of the beard, says, "As the ointment that descends on the beard, the beard of Aaron." Having celebrated the beauty of the beard by a repetition, he made the face to shine with the ointment of the Lord... The moustache similarly, which is dirtied in eating, is to be cut round, not by the razor, for that were not well-bred, but by a pair of cropping scissors. But the hair on the chin is not to be disturbed, as it gives no trouble, and lends to the face dignity and paternal terror."

     :detective: is close.

I've been slowly moving away from pipes and towards handrolled cigarillos. They burn a little cooler, I find, and it seems are more natural than most of the pipe tobaccos available around here.

People who are strongly opposed to smoking usually strike me as unbalanced. Though maybe that isn't the best word for it.

Calling the allegation libelous is prob a bit too strong, but the allegation is not true.

I like to have a few beers with family and friends on occasion but nothing bothers me more than a drunken idiot, even worse when they're clearly intoxicated and begin babbling about the Cana miracle and justify them getting slammed.

    It's always convenient to come up with that story but ignore what scripture really says about drunkenness and drunkards;

    Galatians 5:21
Envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

    1 Corinthians 6:10
Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

    Proverbs 20:1
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

    1 Peter 5:8
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
