  • Many children and young adults also believe eggs were a key ingredient in bread, the researchers said.

The survey showed 26% of children thought bacon came from sheep, 29% thought oats grow on trees, while 17% of both children and adults under the age of 30 believed eggs were a core ingredient in bread.

Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers' Union, said: ''The results show how important it is to teach the adults of tomorrow about the food they eat.

''Everyone should know where primary foods like cereals are grown and the role they play as part of a healthy balanced diet.

''It is critical that children and adults alike understand more about their food, and the role British Farmers play in producing it.''

The survey, conducted on behalf of Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) in the build up to Farmhouse Breakfast Week awareness campaign, concluded older generations knew ''much more'' about food.

The majority of over 40s questioned knew where oats came from and that bread is made from flour, water and yeast.

The survey was conducted online by OnePoll and YoungPoll during November, prompting almost 3,000 replies.

  • Hahaha

My 3 1/2 year old knows very well what goes into bread -- because he sees me make it all the time.

He will also be well aware of where fruits and veggies come from -- because he will have picked many of them himself.

It's pretty sad how far removed many modern children are from reality.

  • The only ingredient I know goes into bread is flour and the ingredient that makes the bread rise (yeast extract I believe?). I was never taught how to cook anything. The only thing I know how to really make is rice, plain pasta, and scrambled eggs. When I am able to move out on my own, however, I will spend time to learn how to cook.

  • Many modern children would be considered mentally retarded in the middle ages.

  • Young nobles were sent to monastery schools and taught by monks. The non-noble children were taught the trade that they were apprenticing under by their masters or their fathers. They were trained with hands on approach. A medievel child could do far more than his modern descendent. His modenr descendent probably spend 15 hours a day watching tv or playing nintendo.

  • I always make my own bread - wholemeal,German farmhouse, French white, walnut, fruit, Irish soda bread, different rolls, scones, crumpets, etc.
Shop bread is always stale and too expensive.

I grew up in a village in England. During the War, poor kids from the East End of London were evacuated there away from the bombs. An old lady told me this:
One day a London kid came running in and said,"What´s that big brown thing behind the hedge?"
"That´s a cow. You get milk from her".
"No you don´t! You get it from a shop! Out of a bottle!"

Old lady digging in the garden.
    London Kid:"What you digging there?"
"I´m digging up some potatoes for dinner"
"Don´t be daft! You don´t get potatoes out of the ground! You get them in the shop, in paper bags.Them things are dirty! I ain´t eating them! Get some clean ones from the shop!"
