I've read some of his stuff over the years but I've come to find it troubling that neo-Catholics take such a liking to him. I also find it troubling that he writes for the shifty Taki Mag website.

And so I read the thread on IgnisArdens with interest. Particularly the comments from MauricePinay and Ashmolean.

"The nineteenth century saw the great occult revival in France. It's leaders were Eliphas Levi, ordained deacon and always faithful Catholic, and Phillipe de Leon ..." (Charles Coulombe, "The Esoteric Orthodoxy of Catholicism," Gnosis Magazine, issue #16, Page 42)

So, I take it you're not a fan?

    Why not?

Yes, he seems interested in macabre preternatural things.  But this in and of itself does not imply he is evil and wrong.  He's up on Coast to Coast AM on August 4th, by the way.

He's fun to read. In that sense, I'm a fan.

    But:

    1. He calls an occultist an "always faithful Catholic."

    2. I'm suspicious of Catholics who have a large platform and fail to discuss Jєωιѕн power.

    3. I'm suspicious of anybody neo-Catholics like.

There's probably more things I could think up.

  • The fact that so many trads seem so ready to go along with flagrant heterodoxy is disturbing.

So many trads seem to have a poor understanding of the crisis in the Church.

This accounts in part, I think, for the widespread quotation of Chesterton, as though he were the pre-eminent Catholic authority.

I read Chesterton before my conversion and liked him, but I wasn't Catholic at the time. I would have to read him again to see what I think of him now that I am a traditional Catholic.

  • I read Chesterton's Orthodoxy, What's Wrong the World, and his book on Dickens. I enjoyed them and thought he was an incredible writer. But that was years ago.

So many Trads say he promotes error.

  • Some audios by Coulombe are available here: Tumblar House

I have also listened to his two interviews with Stephen Heiner on history.

Given that he can be quite sarcastic I wouldn't be surprised if the "always faithful Catholic" comment was written intending to be sarcastic, to point out that the individual was NOT faithful.  He has an odd sense of humor which probably does not come across well on paper.  I'd have to read the whole thing to know for sure, but don't cross off Mr. Coulombe based on just this one report.

  • Sounds like wishful thinking, Marsha.

    Gnosis magazine?

I tried searching for the article online, but it looks like somebody would have to buy the issue.

Besides, he never discusses Jєωιѕн power. I hate to sound like a broken record, but that is always a pretty good sign that someone does not have much in common with Catholics of past ages.

  • I really sympathize with this kind of eccentric speculation, the "magical worldview" as he calls it, but it's like a shallows that drops off suddenly. He studies witches and vampires and elementals and other beings like that and it's fascinating.

But it is hard to see how he goes from St-Dionysus and Bonaventure to Eliphas Levi, as though it were merely a logical succession. I rather suspect it's that sudden drop off I was talking about.
