  • So last year I enrolled my two children in to a catholic school so they can recieve the best education possible and so they can learn catholic values and morals first hand through school. I had to work 3 jobs just to afford it. We just got notices that tuition has gone up for next year. I did apply for tuition assistance and recieved 400.00. However I still will be paying 800 a month... and that is just not possible for me. I already work three jobs. Is there any other places I can apply for help? Thanks!!!

  • If it's a Novus Ordo School, keep your money.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

    Mm-hmm.

OP, if it is a Novus Ordo school (I'm assuming it is) then count yourself blessed they *only* had a year of it.

  • What about homeschooling? Often times, this is the BEST option for serious Catholics out there in the godless secular society we live in.

Public schools are out of the question, as well as Novus Ordo Catholic schools. They are a real danger for children' souls.

If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

Jaketorenme, I see this is your first post. So first of all, welcome! I hope you will hang around after you get you questions answered.

I have some thoughts to share with you and some questions:
    You said:

so they can learn catholic values and morals first hand through school.

1, don't they learn that in your home?

2, most likely the school you send them to does not have Catholic values and morals. That is why we are all asking what catholic shool is it. Who runs it? Is it a diocesan one, my advice to you would be pull them out and teach them yourselves.

3, If the answer to 1 is yes, then your children will pretty soon be torn between what you teach them and the school teaches, because they are most likely diametrically opposed to each other.

This is insanity, or at least will lead there.

Catholic schools, in my country, were started in order to educate the poor children who would otherwise have remained illiterate, by poor women who worked miracles with little or no money in difficult housing conditions. They worked well in both academically and spiritually.

If you are having to pay $(?)800 a month you are being fleeced by money hungry dealers. True Catholic educators would make exceptions for those who cannot afford the fees, in order to ensure as many children as possible are educated in the faith.

But nowadays, there is little faith and most "catholic" schools do not have it and cannot teach it.

Have you told the principal your predicament? Do so, and see the reaction. If s/he is truly Catholic, s/he will do as much as possible to save a marriage. (It must be under stress in your situaltion.)  How much time can you possibly have for family life? God did not mean you for slavery!

You need to get your facts and your priorites right.

Think about homeschooling and ask here. There are plenty here who can help.

  • Another question I meant to ask:
what if God gives you another child or other children? Is that something to consider?

  • I do teach my children the bible at home. Also, I do practice good morals and values. I have not spoken with the principal as of yet, but I will being doing so soon. The education my children recieve is so much better then in a public school. They have a religion class, music, computer and are learning two different languages. (Spanish and French) None of this is offered in public schools around my area. While home schooling seems like it is a good option, I still have to work at least 60 hours a week to provide financial stability for my family. While my children are in school, I work. With them doing home school, they learn for four hours a day leaving a gap of time, which I would have to hire daycare. My children go to a catholic school in onondaga county in New York. Im not comfortable posting the name or exact location of the school, as this is on the internet  :pop:

  • Here is a true story for you:

One night at a restaurant these three young guys snuck out after eating dinner without paying.

The next day the owner of the diner and the manager and the owner's young daughter watched the video tape showing the three young men.

The daughter says, "Hey, I went to Catholic school with all three of those guys for 8 years,"

The father says, "Who are they ?"

The daughter tells him and the father says, "And I know all their fathers because we are all in the Knights of Columbus together !"

Needless to say in short order the young guys paid for their dinner.

The OP may just have to settle for taking one kid out of the private for profit scam school. I went to private school too and it is way over rated.

It is the kid not the school, trust your kids.

What other religious practices are there in your home (apart from teaching them the Bible)?

    They have a religion class
Are you able to discern the difference between teaching the faith and "a religion class"? What religion are they teaching? I mean what is their attitude to ecuмenism and many other issues. Do they teach the symbolism of the Blessed Sacrament? Do they regard Nelson Mandela as a saint? There are a million similar examples, but three should suffice.

It sounds like you are more concerned with academics than religion.

You have not stated whether you are the mother or the father of these children. Can you tell us which? Are you a single mother?

My children go to a catholic school in onondaga county in New York
So this means it is part of the diocesan (newchurch) network. It doesn't look good.

If you could save yourself 800 per month you would still need to work at least 60 hours a week to provide financial stability for my family?

I feel your pain, I'm in Montreal Canada and there are no public catholic schools like when i was  a kid, ( not that it was truly catholic ) the private schools cost a fortune but I will have no choice as homeschooling is not an option for the wife, it will be an all girls school and it was recommended by my SSPX priest, I will have my issues for sure but compared to public school where they would be mingling with muslims I have no choice..do you bring them to catechism at a traditional church?

  • When I attended parochial school from 1954 to 1962 in the good old
days of sound Catholic instructions and teachings, the tuition was only
    $5.00 a month.
The majority of the teachers were Nuns with one or two lay teachers.
On Sunday, there were 6 Masses and the church was always filled
starting at 6:am to 12:15pm. The confession lines were always long.
That is the distant past. I do not know what to say and recommend
at present time except home teaching of Catholic Children.

Do you not think there might be muslims in the "catholic" school? Isn't their money as good as any other money? (The purpose in running these schools sounds to be making money).

I don't live in the US but where I live you are probably better off in a public school where you can learn to defend your faith, rather than in a "catholic" one where your faith is attacked by teachers.
