  • The earlier post about the statue of the IoP started me thinking about how Catholics ornament their homes.  What do you have in your home that proclaims you a Catholic?

At my front door I have a plaque of the Blessed Mother and in my front window a vigil light with statues of the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart. (gotta keep the Mormons away  )

I have Crucifixes in every room, a small assortment of statues inside and outside, and at least one holy picture in every room.

    Anyone else?

  • Crucifixes in all rooms. I don't have anything outside because of the risk of vandalism.

I find Catholic art at thrift stores, people give it to me, and sometimes I even inherit it.

We have the Infant on our mantle, as well as a large assortment of statues. I used to do holy water fonts but haven't since we've lived here. In short, people never leave our house wondering if we are Catholic.

  • I purchased a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague once, but the statue that came was not the one pictured, an inferior one, so I returned it.

I never did find a vendor that had the one pictured. Sigh. Someday perhaps.

I have St. Benedict medals everywhere. Great stuff. What would I do without them?

A picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, honored.. Very very helpful.. crucifixes of course..

A hand sized one to hold onto, and kiss in the morning on waking and before going to sleep. Very happy to have one like this. Not too large, not too small.

Recently hung a spare scapular on the doorknob, and found it made the room feel safer. So now I am happy with the practice.

I like the idea of a holy picture in every room.. perhaps I will take it up..
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • I have two (as my husband calls them) "shrines" in the main living room; one is in a pass-through to the kitchen where I keep fresh flowers, cards, votive candles, blessed candles, icons ...my husband thinks it's a bit much. I always do it up that way for Christmas, only with the nativity on a table and the floor beneath it. I put away the nativity in February, of course, but decided to leave the rest (except obviously Christmas items) because it's beautiful to me, and great for emergency prayers.

Then I have my private prayer spot in that room with several icons (St. Michael, a few Our Ladys, 3 special crucifixes, a rosary from Rome when my g-ma was there, a rosary my son got me in Rome this summer (in case someone doesn't have one), and some other things that mean a lot to me. (Doesn't take up as much room as it sounds since they're arranged together). They're all displayed to face me in "my" chair, but it's a glass table so everyone can see the items. Underneath I keep an older missal my g-dad (who I never met) had; a similarly old D-R, the Imitation, and these Paperblanks notebooks with Book of Kells, Gutenburg, and other manuscript covers that are just amazing. This setup has been with me since childhood, through college, and into Marriage, except the newer stuff of course. It's part of who I am. I travel with it, minus the huge books.

But we're not rich. I've been saving to buy a nice St. Cecilia framed painting for the library (which is fairly private: two desks, a wall of bookshelves, and a huge comfy sofa. And a hockey table right now, but that's going to go to the dump if the kids don't find a home for it soon. The cheaper paintings (or prints) can be not how I picture my name saint at all (I just don't like that one AT ALL). I like this one Strudwick, but the largest size is still a bit small for the room, and is $360 in the large size. I just can't justify spending that kind of money now, anyway.

So I'm actually hoping to find more St. Cecilia art at an auction or yard sale one day. Everyone is helping me look for one, They've found tons of St. Jeanne de Arc, and Our Lady, and lots of Jesus ones of course (all of which are nice), but I'm holding out for a St. Cecilia. (Plus, the people who help me look end up getting nice paintings for themselves, so it all works out great!) Hey, like songbird just posted!

(The kids MUST get older before we get statuary in here again. Last one that got "accidentally", the priest had to bury it. My sister is keeping some of it for me for when the kids get less "wild".)

  • I'll keep my eyes open for St Cecilia.  She is the st. for music, right?  Just last week, an estate sale was emailed to us and you get to see pictures some times of the items for sale.  So, I saw religious items and went soon.  I came home with St. Joseph with the child, sacred heart, Our Lady at 22", and an old picture about 16 X20 or larger with the holy family and the trinity about 1950's in color and it had all the bells and whistles and another statue of our lady which is on waves or shells, I can't tell and it is a cream stone.  I go nuts when there is a catholic home.  I looked for missals and rosaries, medals and there was none.  But there were veils galore! of all colors and I bought them all at a $1 each!

Two years ago I just happened to run into an estate sale and one room was nothing but catholic books!  Man I hit the lottery!  It was the last day of the sale!  Every book was 5o cents!  I bought the whole lot of over 100 books, mostly Tan and I was in heaven!

I keep a check on used book stores.  We have the largest book sale in Phx, AZ Feb nearest valentines day.  I was able to get a few good books but for the last 8 years there is nothing.

If you want to know about estate sales whether they are in your area or not, there is a way to give your email to these groups and they will email you when sales come up.

  • I have a picture of Sacred Heart on wall directly in front of anyone who opens the door, in main room, an altar with Sacred Heart/Immaculate Heart, a wooden crucifix, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis de Sales, St. John Vianney, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Catherine of Siena, Holy Water, Blessed candles.  I have a crucifix and a rosary in each room.  Also, various pictures, etc.  I cannot put any decorations on the outside door by rules of the lease.  It wouldn't be a good idea, anyway because it would be defaced or stolen.  (I live in a rental apartment.)
Once inside, there's no doubt the occupant is Catholic!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • Our place looks like a chapel. Crucifixes, statues, pictures, icons, holy water and salt. It scares most pagans, heathens, Jєωs, mohamedans and especially novus ordites who rarely come in. Of course, the house is consecrated to the Immaculate and Sacred Heart.
I would think evil spirits would flee.

  • Hobbledehoy, danke schön.

It is beautiful. We say this prayer every Sunday for thanksgiving after Sacred Mass.

  • You're quite welcome. I've been posting the Masses in German-Latin too over at the Sacred Liturgy section. Only God knows the debt I owe the Germans...

    Here's another prayer:

  • Crucifixes in each room, holy water, holy cards, candles, incense. I am eagerly looking for statues of Our Lord & Our Lady. Would love to have one outside too.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.
