A married New York father of three will be ordained a Roman Catholic priest this week, thanks to an unusual provision in the church’s strict celibacy laws.

John Cornelius, a veteran Episcopal minister, is being allowed to join the Catholic priesthood in Buffalo, N.Y., because of a recent papal ruling by Pope Benedict.

According to the Buffalo Evening News, more than 100 former Anglican priests have applied to become Catholic priests. Cornelius will be among the first 30 to be ordained.

“I look forward to celebrating Mass again. It’s been two years, and I missed it greatly. That closeness to God is an amazing thing,” he told the Evening News.

Cornelius will be ordained by Bishop Richard Malone of the Diocese of Buffalo on Saturday.

The 64-year-old minister, who has three daughters, converted to Catholicism two years ago with his wife, Sharyl, after spending 20 years in the Episcopal Church.

Catholic priests are not allowed to marry, but the Pope last year altered the rule so that disaffected Episcopalians and Anglicans could join the church.
Cornelius’ disenchantment with the direction of the Episcopal Church came, in part, with its approval of a gαy bishop in 2003.

“I’m a traditionalist in a lot of ways,” he told the newspaper.

Will his intention be valid?  Will he be ordained validly?  Will be saying a valid rite?

He seems to think he's doing the same thing he was doing before he was ordained.

Of course, Benedict XVI has services jointly with Protestants, one could see that confusion would be created.

So he became a Catholic believing that the Anglican "Mass" is the equivalent of the Novus Ordo?

On second thoughts, he could be right.

Still, he's never had to repent of his Anglican heresy.

Even if his ordination and the Novus Ordo were valid, his intention is to experience what he experienced when he was an Anglican once more.

  • Though I am completely for the Church keeping celibacy laws, wasn't the apostle Matthew married?  And others?  I don't recall.

It's possible that almost all of them may have been married.

But the Catholic Church is guided by the Holy Ghost and 2000 years of Sacred Tradition is something to hold fast to.

  • May just as well allow married priests - heck, women priests too. I mean honestly, whats the difference any more.

We have not been able to go to the NO in 45 years anyway and maybe that's what it would take to wake up whats left of the lethargic NO catholics?

  • Maybe the married anglican-catholic priest will apply for entry into the SSPX after he experiences another "conversion."   :)

    Baby steps, baby steps.

This is the first baby step on the path to a married clergy.

There won't be much good argument for it anymore and I don't think B16 cares so much about it anyway.

The baby step for women clergy will happen, though, through the diaconate.  You see, they will argue, the diaconate is permanent now.  Those who don't "like" womyn priests won't have to worry too much because they won't become actual priests.

Will "traditional" NO parishioners wake up?  Maybe a few.  But most won't care because well the Pope can do what he wants to--he's the Pope.

That is what happened with married male permanent deaconate.

  • Ol' scratch hatched this nifty little stratagem a long time ago in a garden far, far away...

"Honey, what would you like for lunch?"

"Oh, gee, Darling, I dunno. Why don't you just go ahead and surprise me!"

  • Funny. I was at Kroger's one day and saw a bald headed man dressed in clerical
garb - roman collar and black suited. I had heard that a grandpa had recently been ordained (N0) and was supposed to be in our area. He was in line for checkout. So, I walked by and said, "Introibo ad altare Dei." He just looked at me and I am certain he had no idea of what I was saying. I then grabbed a couple of food items and returned to the line and spoke to him once more, "Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam". He just stared. Anyway . . .
