The main problem with this thread is that a "Jєωιѕн scholar" was even given such credence in a matter that pertained to the Catholic Church.

Have you read the book Judaism and the Vatican?

I recall reading some of it many years ago. Does it say that we should deem all Jєωιѕн "scholars" as authoritative in matters Catholic?

No, not at all.  I would presume the reason he quotes a Jєω there is that to quote a Catholic making such a remark would seem self-serving and not as convincing.

The main thrust of the book is to expose by Jєωιѕн writings the source of the changes in Church teachings on the Jєωs.

Ah, thank you. I asked because I was reading the book Tele referred to, Judaism and the Vatican. In it, the author quoted a Jєωιѕн scholar who actually defended the church in her treatment of Jєωs. He, the Jєωιѕн scholar, said, "The church endowed all human beings with a soul, and it took a man's life only to save his soul."

I would not take this expression literally.  The author is probably trying to make the phrase seem ironic.  If you think of "man" generally, the point is that the persecution of heretics was intended to save souls.

"taking a man's life to save his soul" is intended to have something of an ironic sound to it I think.

I believe Leon de Poncins takes this quote to show that Jєωs admit that the pagan antisemitism was murderous because it was pagan, unrestrained by Christian morality.

This contrasts with the anti-Christian Jєωs who attempt to lay the blame for the nαzιs at the feet of the Church and even the Gospels.

  • The plain fact of it is...neither the Church, nor Catholic States, kill men to save their souls.  Suggesting otherwise is a lie, however unintentionally.

Even when a Catholic family defects and goes Judaic, their child who is now 5 years old who was baptized after birth, is allowed to remain with his perverted Jєωιѕн parents (validly baptized). The Church forbids interference. Unfortunate for the child, but that is the way it goes.

If you reread that book you'll see he is giving a selection of Jєωιѕн opinions, he is not necessarily endorsing the opinions he's quoting, usually he's trying to expose the harmfulness of those views.

In 1858 there was a famous case when the Papal Police took a six year old boy from his Jєωιѕн parents, because he was baptized by a servant.
The law forbade Christians to be raised by Jєωs.

This boy, Edgardo Mortara, later became a Priest.

  • There was a group of heretics that killed people immediately after baptism. It may have been covered in "Characters of the Inquisition" by Walsh.
