  • I just wanted to let everyone know what is going on.

I have no idea what is causing these sudden glitches. It might be something my webhost did.

How to deal with them: The <F5> button is your friend. Use it early and often. <F5> will REFRESH the current page: whether it's the New Posts page, the topic listing for a given sub-forum, or the post you just LIKED/DISLIKED.

I notice that when I like a post and click CONTINUE, it doesn't show the vote I just cast -- until I refresh the page.

I will look into this today of course -- but I don't know how many hours it will take me to figure it out. In the meantime, use my advice above to deal with the problem.

    Thank you for your patience.

  • Thank you Matthew.  I thought it was just my computer.  It started last night.  I am unable to sign out, or do any other functions such as open the messenger, and as you wrote above I also cannot see any new posts, even when refreshing the page.  I will try the F5.

It's not that bad for me --

    What browser are you using?

    Ha. ha.

Seriously, it's not any kind of denial of service. That's where thousands of machines hit a website so hard that everything slows to a crawl.

And we shouldn't make it look like we're obsessed with Pablo, or that we hate him. We merely want Fr. Pfeiffer to rein him in -- to fire him from his "media spokesman" position, which he clearly isn't cut out for.

IE.  I just tried Firefox and at least it allows me to sign in/out, but not see the new postings unless I do F5.

  • About the only glitch I'm observing here (in Chrome) is whenever I like/dislike a post, and I click continue (which goes BACK one step in the browsing history) the old page is displayed -- the number of likes/dislikes is not updated.

When I hit refresh, then it updates without fail.

But it's almost like it's using the old version of the page, and not asking the server to re-create the page when I go -1 in the history.

You'll notice that when you click CONTINUE the link actually is

    javascript:go(-1)

Which is Javascript for "go back 1 page in your browsing history". Before, it always asked the server to re-generate the page, which is why the like/dislike count was always updated.

    But now that isn't happening.

    EITHER

    A) The browser is "better" or more aggressive at cacheing -- it remembers the full URL of the page before you clicked "like" and displays it to you again

    B) The browser is doing nothing different, but on the MySQL (server) end it's not re-generating the page for some reason.

I'm inclined to go with A, since the behavior seems to vary by browser. Also, if you like SEVERAL posts on the same page, you still get no updates until you eventually refresh.

Anyone with technical know-how -- please feel free to chime in with your ideas.

    Same here

  • Interestingly, both my work computer and my home computer installed some Windows updates.

I am using Chrome and everything works perfectly.

My guess is that MS deployed a "security fix" to IE yesterday and busted some stuff.

LOL.  Yes, that would be a distributed denial of service attack.  What I envision is Pablo sitting there hitting the Refresh button as quickly as he can over and over again.

Yeah, you're right.  I was just trying to make a funny, suggesting that Pablo might be attacking since he and Father P have been taking heat on CI lately.

Either that or DM prayed the site down.  In which case I might have to reconsider.  Except that I have had no trouble with CI.

Yep.  I would consider this the likely culprit:

My computer also installed updates last evening, which was when the troubles began for me.  The site is virtually non-working at all if I use IE.

  • After refreshing some pages which had been cached, everything is working fine again for me using IE.
