Well, I grew up with exciting "pop" music, which usually has a beat. I wouldn't call it "rock" because that covers too many things. The music I listened to was nothing like oldies (50's, 60's rock) which I can't stand, or so-called "classic rock" from the 70's, which is utter garbage.
In fact, some songs I listened to -- songs on the radio -- were almost in different categories, with chant-like, new age-like, or country-like qualities to them. It's hard to peg all music in a single category.
Anyhow, some people, because of their temperament, need something a little more exciting than Mozart piano music, at least some of the time.
They say music is a reflection of what's in the soul -- and I fully agree. I am very busy these days, and I have energy inside me that you wouldn't believe sometimes. I'm a very passionate and intense person. I like Irish folk music because it seems to fit me -- a good beat, good lyrics, good melody, etc.
It has order in it, with intensity and energy. That's me!
We're not supposed to limit ourselves music-wise to 100% Gregorian chant and the tamest of classical. And this is coming from someone who literally sells Gregorian chant cds! :)
In fact, I can relate to Bishop Williamson a bit -- he apparently has an emotional/intense side -- one of his favorite composers is Beethoven (same here). Beethoven is the closest thing to "rock music" in the Classical world.
Listen to the Kreutzer Sonata and see what I mean.
