In regards to being a responsible man, would it be interesting to learn, after six years of accuмulating all the wisdom you could, that you had it right all alon

  • It keeps a very good beat -- makes it very pleasant to listen to (if you like music with a bit of a kick to it)

Tell me where is Gandalf...for I MUCH desIRE to SPEAK with HIM...

BTW, I only like up to 1:39. (Right up to where Gollum says "Go away, and never come back...") Everything after that is crap.

I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi

Yes, beat is in my opinion the best part of any song. If it at least has that, then I'll be drumming my fingers even if it's classical.

  • If anyone here is young enough -- and old enough -- to remember the Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack (from the 90's) -- it reminds me of that a bit.

There was a track on there that had a beat about like this -- and even had a whispering line (from Raiden).

  • My favorite comment on the video:

"Where were they taking those Hobbits again?"

  • Now this video really tried to offend my eyes and ears. How can you watch and listen to this? Eyes and ears are going dizzy! :-)

Tolkien wouldn't have liked this. This is Orc music and pictures. However Tolkien chose to be a Hobbit. ;-)

Well, my ears are being used to Gregorian chants. They utterly refuse to listen to rock, rap and other modern "music".

Bishop Williamson recently wrote several great Eleison Comments (EC) on modern Art: Gauguin and his emptiness.
I think somebody could encourage him to write some EC on modern music. There's a good essay by Father Williamson on Rock Music, but I can't find it on the Internet anymore. It's been in "The Angelus" years ago, when "The Angelus" still was worth to be read...

P.S. My Avatar shows Antonio Vivaldi by the way. One of the few priests who composed wonderful classical music.

  • Well, I grew up with exciting "pop" music, which usually has a beat. I wouldn't call it "rock" because that covers too many things. The music I listened to was nothing like oldies (50's, 60's rock) which I can't stand, or so-called "classic rock" from the 70's, which is utter garbage.

In fact, some songs I listened to -- songs on the radio -- were almost in different categories, with chant-like, new age-like, or country-like qualities to them. It's hard to peg all music in a single category.

Anyhow, some people, because of their temperament, need something a little more exciting than Mozart piano music, at least some of the time.

They say music is a reflection of what's in the soul -- and I fully agree. I am very busy these days, and I have energy inside me that you wouldn't believe sometimes. I'm a very passionate and intense person. I like Irish folk music because it seems to fit me -- a good beat, good lyrics, good melody, etc.

It has order in it, with intensity and energy. That's me!

We're not supposed to limit ourselves music-wise to 100% Gregorian chant and the tamest of classical. And this is coming from someone who literally sells Gregorian chant cds! :)

In fact, I can relate to Bishop Williamson a bit -- he apparently has an emotional/intense side -- one of his favorite composers is Beethoven (same here). Beethoven is the closest thing to "rock music" in the Classical world.

Listen to the Kreutzer Sonata and see what I mean.

  • Salve Matthew,

Well, I don't basically agree but it doesn't matter. :-)
On some tape I finally found a backup copy of the mentioned article on Rock and Roll music by (then) Father Williamson. It's the very best I've ever read on the entire topic, and it really made me stop listening to rock and pop etc music instantly.

    Here's a link to it:

Rock and Roll: A deadly Revolution
By Father Richard Williamson, September 1985
