A Message from Fr. Tom Lynch, President of Priests For Life Canada:

This is a black day for our nation. This morning as expected, the Canadian Supreme Court struck down any lasting protection for the sick, elderly, disabled and vulnerable in our country. In a unanimous decision, Section 241 (b) and Section 14 of the criminal code which prohibits assisted ѕυιcιdє was struck down.  The court is allowing physician assisted killing for “a competent adult person who 91) clearly consents to the termination of life and (2) has a grievous and irremediable medical condition ( including an illness, disease or disability) that causes enduring suffering that is intolerable to the individual in the circuмstances of his or her condition.”
 
The Justices made it very clear that the secular principle of autonomy trumps any sanctity of life or the protection of the weak and vulnerable persons. In a feat of stunning legal ju-jitsu they overturned the Rodrigues case from 20 years ago and blatantly ignored the hardened reality of the slippery slope towards open mercy killing in any other countries.
 
We have entered a new chapter in our battle in Canada. The Catholic Church (and its other Christian allies) the Pro-life movement and especially the Priests for Life Canada will have to fight hard and long to reverse this horrific decision. We are not called to lose heart or waver but to think clearly about new strategies, to gird ourselves for a long hard battle and to pray even more fervently for the direction and help of the Lord in our time.
