  • I don't see how you could be an "occasional" smoker, smoking every x number of weeks or months, because the feeling you like from smoking comes after you have already smoked regularly for a while, I forgot what it's called, but I know that if you stop smoking for 2 or 3 days, and then smoke again, it won't feel good like before, and you will have to keep smoking regularly to get the feeling back. I have done this several times, to stop smoking for days or weeks, and this always happened to me.

  • My point is that if you try smoking the first time it's really bad and not something you like, and this will happen every time you don't smoke for 2-3 days, so in order to actually like smoking, wouldn't you be considered an addict already since you have to do it everyday or at least every other day in order to like it?

I used to smoke a lot. I smoked mostly cigarettes I rolled myself without filters and I also smoked from pipes for a while. I think there is a difference between cigarettes and pipes and cigars. I think it is easier to smoke cigars or pipes and enjoy it without being addicted than it is to smoke cigarettes. I think there is also a difference of whether or not you inhale the smoke into your lungs or if you just bring the smoke into your mouth. If you inhale the smoke I think it is harder to enjoy it without being addicted, but if you only bring the smoke into your mouth I think it is easier to enjoy without being addicted.
    R.I.P.

Yeah I know they're different. I should've specified I was only referring to cigarettes.

I know that even before V2 many clerics smoked cigarettes.

  • There were a number of years where I smoked about 2 cigarettes per week, only on Sunday afternoons.

  • I think you have to differentiate between addiction and habit.  Many people say one when infact the other applies.

Consider the the following true circuмstances.

    1.  A 40 year smoker now smoking over 60 cigarettes a day moves to her parents home to look after a dying parent and is too busy and exhausted to smoke for three weeks.

    Addiction or habit?

    2.  A man is hospitalized for a week who has smoked for over 50 years and presently smokes about a pack a day.  During that time he never even thought about smoking.  (He was conscious the whole time)

    Addiciton or habit?

How many people automatically do something (smoke) every time they have a coke?  Would you consider that an addiction or a habit?

As for not enjoying smoking after a break it's probably just that your taste buds became unaccustomed to it

Those are exaggerated amounts of cigarettes. That certainly would seem like addiction and a sure way to get cancer. I wouldn't even be able to take that much, or have the time. The most i had in mind were half a pack a day, or around 8 or 9.

I know many other people who have experienced the same and i have read about it too. They call cigarette smoking an "acquired habit", since you don't naturally or normally like it.

  • Pipe tobacco and cigars are quite different from cigarettes.

With pipe tobacco you're getting: tobacco.

With cigarettes you're getting pretty altered nicotine in free-base form, which hits you much faster and thus is more addictive.

The speed at which a drug acts is directly proportional to how addictive it is, and cigarettes have much more free base nicotine (absorbed much, much, much faster), about 35 times more free base nicotine than naturally occurs in tobacco.

The amounts smoked was not exaggerated.  These are retired people with lots of time on their hands
I meant the soft drink not cocaine.

I didn't mean you exaggerated, but that the amount was too much.

Ive never come close to smoking that much.

  • My brother used to be a smoker until he couldn't afford it anymore..   I seen him occasionally bum a cigarette from a friend but he never buys his own.  Addicted? No. A cheapskate? Yes.

  • People manage to smoke as much or as little as they want.  Sometimes stress increases their desire.  I know SSPX priests who smoke cigarettes, not like chimneys but they do indulge when the fancy takes them.

My personal opinion is that it is only a problem if the cost is a factor (health considerations aside).  I know many smokers and don't mind at all as long as they smoke outside.  And I love the smell of a good cigar or pipe!
