  • I am suffering from anemia. My hemoglobin rate is around an 8.5 or 8. I am feeling a bit dizzy and weak (not too much yet). I need more iron and meat has iron. Just wondering if I can forgoe the Lent Friday meat abstinance in this instance.

    Aren't health reasons always excused?

    Alex,
You  have to get a dispensation from a priest to eat meat on Fridays during Lent or on any Friday of the year.  From my understanding, you cannot eat meat until you do that.
The only Friday you can eat meat is the Friday after Thanksgiving, or when a prominent feast like  Christmas falls on a Friday.  b]

  • Alex,
I agree with Emerentiana, I'd talk to a priest.

I imagine you are eating iron rich foods from a variety of sources, but just in case you don't have a list of them, I googled a search for iron rich foods and came up with these links:
    http://www.healthcastle.com/iron.shtml  and:
    http://www.redcrossblood.org/learn-about-blood/health-and-wellness/iron-rich-foods

Shrimp, clams and sardines are on the list so they'd be great for Friday and Lent.

Vitamin C will help your body to absorb the iron, so eat something with Vitamin C with each iron food or take a Vit. C supplement with meals.  A friend of mine had that problem and was also told to drink lots of water.

If you have a blendor you can make a shake with some of the iron-rich foods (like kale, spinach, collards, prunes) and an orange or kiwi & orange juice for the vitamin C.

I just looked over the list on the Red Cross link above and they have a pretty good list, but the corn syrup suggestion surprised me.  That's just crazy.  That's on my no-no list, but they have some good suggestions otherwise.

    Good luck to you.

None of the bishops or priests in Traddieland have the power to dispense, although they like to pretend otherwise.  Hell, they do not even have the faculties to hear confessions or marry people.

If you NEED meat, eat it.  If you can find another solution, do it.

  • FWIW, when I had just entered the seminary, I felt woozy during my first real lenten fast.  The rector told me to eat some cake.  I did so and all was well, as it got my blood sugar closer to normal.

The object of the fast is to purify, not immobilize.  If you need to violate the letter of the law to maintain the spirit, do so -- and do not second guess yourself.

  • GV,

Are you saying that Sedevacantists can't get married or get their sins absolved?
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Yes. I was told by my doctor to take iron pills but taking care of a relative full time makes me often forget to take care of myself or be too tired to take care of myself.

  • I ended up talking to a trad priest and he said that I could eat meat if it was for health reasons. So I went out and bought a Big Mac because my head was feeling heavy.
