  • It unfortunately did not arrive. It should have taken 5 or 6 days by USPS. It's been about 12 days.
I'm thinking it was mis-delivered to a neighbor or something. I don't have access to the tracking information (since I'm not the one who purchased it) so I don't have smoking gun evidence that it was "delivered" but certainly not to me.

If this was an order I purchased, I'd be on the horn to Amazon right now, telling them "sure, maybe you say it was delivered -- but it wasn't delivered to me!"

Problem is, it's difficult to complain about mis-delivered packages when you're just an intended gift recipient.

I really don't want Amazon to get away with this theft. I'd rather the donor get their money back and NOT buy me something else, than have an intended donor buy something for one of my neighbors -- a neighbor who is obviously dishonest, since they kept and stole a package with my name and address on it. No, if a thief is going to be $18 richer, I want that to come out of Amazon's hide, or the USPS -- not a generous fellow Catholic and CathInfo member.

If you purchased this for me, please send me a screenshot of the tracking info -- maybe I can contact Amazon if I have the order number, and/or the tracking information. A screenshot of the latest shipping "status" would be good -- where it says "delivered" and whatnot. That would help.

  • Sometimes they also send a picture of where they put the item.  I've occasionally had them put something in strange / unexpected locations (being too lazy to come up to the porch).  I've also had a few things over the years where they claimed they had delivered it but had not, and it showed up a day or two later.

Also, I've seen them put certain item on "delay", where it says "schedule to be delivered today" and then late that night I'd get an update that there was a delay, and that it would take an extra week, and then another e-mail, and then told they had "supply problems" and finally cancel the order after nearly a month.

Normally, if Amazon stocks the product, you get it pretty quickly, but if it's coming from a third-party vendor, it could be hit or miss.

That was me, amazon says it hasn't shipped yet and should ship on Sunday the 18th and have 1 day delivery, if it doesn't come tomorrow I will contact them again.

Wow I did not expect that.

The reason being, I click on the item and it claims to be in stock, with a possible arrival date of "tomorrow", etc.
It's like they were lying about how many they had in stock. Amazon doesn't usually do that.

Thank you though -- both for the gift, and for letting me know the status. I was wondering what was going on. I wish Amazon was a bit more advanced -- they certainly have room for improvement. When someone sends a gift to a given address, if they are an Amazon user, those order(s) should show up in some kind of "incoming" tab under Orders. Along with tracking information. It's not like the buyer isn't shipping it -- GIVING it -- to John Doe anyhow. If it's being GIVEN to John Doe, then it's John Doe's package, right? Once John Doe's address is selected for the destination, John Doe should be able to track packages that are supposedly destined for him.

Only the gift giver can track the package. Only the recipient knows when/if it arrives. See the mismatch there?

Everyone can look backwards and see how improvements have happened. I see room for improvement *today*. Someday we'll look back at 2024 Amazon and groan at how backwards, primitive, and un-integrated their system was.

On a similar note, I saw a headline about how a woman *makes a living* buying food at Sam's Club and selling it on Amazon. That shows we have a long way to go. We've all seen the ridiculously overpriced grocery items on Amazon, right? I think they're aimed at businesses, who have Amazon accounts set up -- they could get things cheaper, but they'd have to submit receipts, etc. and the path of least resistance is to buy it from Amazon and it shows up the next day. The Accountant doesn't need paperwork, because she already has access to the company Amazon account. But either way -- someone's eventually going to step into that void and fulfill that need.

You shouldn't have to pay $12 for a $4 grocery. Like I said: someday we'll look back on this decade and laugh.

  • Yep, you're getting the old "Delayed" message that I referred to in my previous post above.  I had one order where I said, "I'll wait." and then the next delivery date passed, and I said "I'll wait again", and finally got a notice that Amazon was having "supply chain issues" and would have to cancel the order ... despite the fact that the item continued to be shown as "In Stock" on Amazon.

  • I don't know what Amazon's game is, but Ladislaus' last post is exactly what happened here. The item continues to be shown "In stock" and can supposedly be shipped to my home in 1-2 days if I ordered it right now, according to Amazon's website.

And yet -- an existing order of this item is being messed around with. "Delayed", "Delayed again", etc. I still haven't received the item after a month.

Don't know what their problem is. You'd think the #1 or #2 retailer in the United States could do better than this. Talk about flaky.

I mean let's look at the facts. Item shown "In stock" on website, but can't seem to ship one to you. They don't even give a reason for the repeated "delays". That's entering scam territory. For one of the largest retailers in the US!

  • With the caveat that I avoid trading with Amazon (I do find it useful for product research) … Jeff Bezos doesn’t need my money and I’d rather support local brick & mortar shops … I don’t find this necessarily surprising.  For often informed reasons I would attribute it to “information technology gaps” rather than “scam territory”.

I’ve had some involvement with “supply chain management”.  Despite a company being very large or being viewed as “cutting edge” they probable built up or developed their computerized systems over time.  These systems may not always be integrated and the company may not always have the latest updates.  I know of one situation where the catalog software system is independent of the order fulfillment system.  So, the catalog system generates a printed report of online orders.  Warehouse workers handpick the orders from the shelves into a shopping cart.  When the order is packed and shipped the shipping department software generates a printed invoice to include in the package, and a digital file for the order.  The latter has to be imported back into the catalog software to update the inventory. Initially this digital information had to be transmitted from one computer to another via a USB stick, they do use a cable now.

I once had a short lived retail job with Lowe’s (worst thirty days of my life).  A customer would come in and ask for something, my handheld device would show it available in the local stock, but the item was nowhere to be found in the store.  Other times a customer would bring me a physical item for a price check or more product information and the scan would show that the item was “discontinued” (when an item is discontinued remaining inventory is pulled from the sales floor) or is “out-of-stock”, yet in front of me is someone holding the actual physical item.
