Brown scapular and Sports

  • I am currently a senior in high school and wear the brown scapular. I only mention that I am a senior because I do wrestling for my school and have a question about the scapular. When I wrestle in matches we have to wear singlets and the scapular would constantly either a. Move and the referee would probably say something or B. Fall off.

So my question is: when I have to wear a singlet, what am I to do with my scapular? I am afraid to take it off because what if I get hurt, but maybe I have the wrong understanding of the promise? Please help because the season starts very soon.

    Thank you.

  • My opinion is that when exercising, you can put the scapular in your pocket or maybe in your sock (if you get one that’s protected with plastic), as long as you keep it with you.  I wear one normally when jogging, swimming or most any activity but I do see that wrestling would be unique.

  • Recall that the Scapular is like a religious habit.  If a monk would take off his habit to, say, take a shower, or do some kind of work that cannot be done safely while wearing a habit, without therefore being said to no longer be a religious of that order, then you can do the same with a scapular.

Scapular is not a magic talisman, and God is not waiting behind a bush to strike you dead the instant you take it off for a shower.

Wearing the scapular means that you should HABITUALLY wear it.  Habitually wearing it does not mean wearing it every moment of every day, but that it's part of your regular clothing.  So, for instance, pretty much every time I get changed or dressed, I make sure I put the scapular on just before putting on my T-shirt.  In other words, it's as regular a part of my wardrobe as my T-shirt is.

Trust in God's Mercy.  If you wear it regularly, have confidence that he will not cut you down in the shower if you happen to be in a state of sin and for a few minutes remove the scapular.  That is not God.

  • I wear the Brown Scapular 24/7 (even while sleeping, you get used to it) except when I am taking a shower or engaging in activity where circuмstances dictate otherwise (swimming, working on equipment or machinery where it could get tangled up and create a safety hazard, etc.).

As far as wearing the scapular while choosing to live in mortal sin, you very well could die while it is off your person, and that would be God's justice for living in mortal sin and making a mockery of the Scapular Promise.

Yeah but you could do that even if you were scrupulous about keeping it on at all times.

Which is Ladislaus' point.  Christ wants us to live lives that are pleasing to him.  He's not looking to get us on technicalites.

I don’t intend to make a mockery of the Scapular promise. I don’t want to live in mortal sin but there is only 1 place where I can get valid confessions and that is A. Kinda far and B. Not easily accessible except for some Friday’s and Sunday’s after mass.

👍👍👍 although I do wear a scapular medal in the shower......I’m a bit scrupulous. 😀
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

I used to as well, but then I thought through it.  God doesn't operate that way.  And if God were to make me drop dead in the shower without my Scapular, then that's His will also, and glory be to Him.  We should all try to work more on trusting Him.  God wants us to be saved more than we want ourselves to be.  If even a bad parent wants good for his children, then how much more does God?
