  • My wife and I are going to be having our first child in about a month. The baby is due around May 23. I have been looking for some good books, Catholic or not, pertaining to the raising of good children. We have a good book that deals with teaching the Faith to the child. But I am looking for a book, article, or just some good old fashion good advice on how to properly correct and discipline children. I am not completely ignorant to this topic and I do have some ideas of what to do, but I want to do some further study on the subject. Does anyone know of anything good?

As for articles, I have found several very good ones in Tradition in Action website under Formation of Children & Youth:

If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • I guess I'm old-fashioned but when I have an ideal for raising children I don't go to Dr. Spock but General Franco.

In other words I think the best way to keep children in order is by having them know that their actions have consequences, the biggest being the black leather belt.

I don't believe in reading books, pre se, but by your own feelings of what feels right towards raising children.

  • Antony, the best advice I can give you is to absolutely, under no circuмstances, submit to that "Church of Nice" malarkey. Teaching the Faith to children means teaching that your actions have consequences and that we need to realize that.
Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary...

  • I'm not a by-the-book kind of person but what I will recommend is working on your marriage. If you and your spouse are of the same page regarding everything and have resolved to live lovingly and help one another to heaven, then chances are you will be on the same page regarding discipline, education, and all the other aspects of parenting. It really is so essential to have a smooth running marriage, it puts everything else right regarding children.

They key with discipline is to do it with love and to be consistent. I don't think a whole book is necessary if you can get those principles down, you should be all set.

In addition, family rosary, every day, without exception. I've never known a bad parent who prayed the rosary with their children every day, and I've never known a tremendously good parent who neglected to pray the family rosary.

  • Cantarella, just a small clarification to the recommendation for "How to Raise Good Catholic Children"
I was going to order this for a family member a few months ago, but I saw this very valuable comment in Amazon:

[/quote]Sadly, this wonderful book was poorly edited in a misguided attempt to "update" the text. It is still a great reference, but I advise traditional Catholics to find the original text published by the same author under the title "We and Our Children". The traditional Latin Mass was explained in beautiful detail in the original version, but in this edition, most of the descriptions were eliminated to make it "modern" and match the new Mass from the 1970s. I hope the publisher will reproduce the original, unedited version for those who appreciate the traditional liturgy. I bought both books and one can vividly see how much of our Catholic heritage we have lost when one compares the two editions and sees how much was eliminated.

So the "original' entitled We and Our Children was ordered - had to get a used copy in good condition, but what an excellent book.

(don't forget to order items from Amazon via Matthew's link)
