  • Today is the anniversary of the death of Mrs. Mary Hall, the lady who spread the idea of the Block Rosary at the request of the Blessed Mother.  The message to pray the Rosary more often and with more devotion is good, even if it is less likely we'll join with our neighbors to do it.   Her story is here:

  • We have a block rosary formed within our Catholic community.  Every Mon. at 7:00 we meet just for about 30 minutes, taking turns at each others home.  The promises of this devotion were attractive to me, the one I cling to is the one that reduces crime in your neighborhood.  Although I have several Traditional Catholics living on my block, for some reason they do not attend.  Those that do attend are from nearby blocks composed from about 8 families.

I feel the times we live in today, the economy, crime will increase, the block rosary is insurance, not to mention praying the rosary in a group has many spiritual benefits.

Here at Mount St. Michael's parish, truly a Catholic community, we have several block rosaries formed throughout the miles that surround our Chapel.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • The blockrosary.com website seems to be inactive at the moment, and I've been told that it's been that way for a while now. Does anybody have any idea who owns the site, or how to contact them? I'm looking for more information that may have been on the website.

    Thank you.

It could be one of her children but it's been so long - if I had to guess, I'd say her son Dominic was the one who kept the website going, and I'm pretty sure they lived in Dearborn, not Detroit. Probably not much help but that's all I have - sorry.

  • Pehaps Our Lady came again as a reminder to us, since so many dismissed the "events" at Fatima.  There are remnants of the original block rosary groups all over the world.

Perhaps Our Lady was adding emphasis to the importance of families to pray (at least daily) the Holy Rosary together, at the time in history when the ideal Catholic family was being torn apart by modernism and eventually the influx of the errors of Vatican II.

No one is required to believe in private revelation, athough the "proof" is in the behavioral outcomes such a belief leads to.

My parents knew Mrs. Hall personally as a very good Catholic woman, entirely devoted to the Faith, and the recitation of the Rosary.  We always prayed a family Rosary together (as a very large family) at 7:30 pm to conclude our day.  It wasn't feasible for us to get together with neighbors to pray, but I know very many people who did.  Today, a great majority who adopted the practice are still Catholic.  A plus in my book!

I know some of the extended Hall family.  They are good, traditional Catholics, and we are blessed to know them.

p.s.  If you read Mrs. Hall's testimony linked in the OP, the Blessed Mother stated specifically the occassion of praying the Rosary together was not intended to be a social event.  Mrs. Hall had a personality a bit like Padre Pio....she was known to "tell it like is is."

Also, when meditating well as we should, a bomb could blow up in the next room, and it wouldn't (overly) interrupt our thoughts on the mysteries.  A few extra people in the group shouldn't matter IMO, if they all have the same intention.  Just my thoughts.

Personally, I don't think the "block rosary" private revelation is legitimate private revelation. This occurred in the 1940's, merely some 25 years after Fatima. If it were from heaven, I don't see why Our Lady wouldn't have mentioned it when she mentioned about saying the Rosary. And after all these centuries of the Saints and popes promoting the rosary, it is suspicious that it wasn't mentioned.

The Rosary is the greatest private devotion for the individual and world, and saying it in groups can be beneficial.

Circuмstantially, however, I don't think it is beneficial. It fits in too well with the movement of the latter 20th century of getting laymen to be more "social" like Protestants, and increasing the vocal participation with each other, and with the liturgy.

More importantly, the very "soul" of the Rosary is the mental prayer (or meditation). Where that is interfered with, the Rosary loses most of its worth. It is difficult enough to make your meditation well privately, but public Rosary is much more difficult. It is even more difficult when you have a block Rosary, and you socialize beforehand and afterward, and often have to concentrate on just keeping in sync with the vocal prayers. The meditation becomes almost token, when people start to think they are mediating just by mentioning a list of facts in their heads pertaining to a mystery, as if the mere mention is even meditation. Then people become proud that they are doing great by the number of people participating and how they share in their merits....and often the gossip that can too easily follow the session, ruins it.

As I said, it "can" be beneficial, but I think there is a very good reason why we haven't heard of it before the 1940's.

    Thanks, Nado.

A little common sense (which is NEVER opposed to the Faith) is always appreciated.

In the Twentieth Century, only Fatima, Banneaux and Beauraign were given approval for public veneration by Rome.

That is not to say that some fervorini who "thought" they had been visited from the "Great Beyond" with a "Special Message" weren't sincere as the day is long. But it's meaningless except to their fan club.

If you're referring to Mary, no, I'm one of her grandchildren. Dominic is my uncle. None of us have ever had anything to do with that website. It's registered to someone in Russia, actually. But, thank you for replying!

Yes, I was referring to Mary and her son Dominic - aside from Mary, Dominic was the only one of her family that I remember. Seems Dominic was always there to help setup for Mass. I served Mass in Mary's living room a handful of times back in the days of Fr. Bonfil, whenever I think of her, I always remember her with her big black beautiful rosary - I don't think she ever put it down. She was always very kind to us. That's how I remember her from about 45 years ago.

  • I read the link but it just doesn't ring true to me.  I don't care for the words and tone attributed to Our Lady.

"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? COME AND GET YOUR GROUPS."

"RUN MY CHILD. YOU CAN SAVE YOURS. MINE MUST DIE."

  • Caps Lock doesn't help here.
"There's a mix of passion and shortsightedness in me, even when I'm positive that I'm doing my very best to see things for what they are, that warns me that I'll never know for sure. Undoubtedly I must follow the truth I can see, I have no choice and I must live on; but that is for me only, not to impose on others." - Fr. Leonardo Castellani
