I picked up two scapulars at the gift shop after Mass today, and they each had a St. Benedict's medal and a crucifix attached to them.  One of the scapulars is for my sister and the other is for me, because I gave mine to my brother when he told me that he had lost his.  After leaving, I realized that I really should have these medals blessed, because my sister might not take care of it herself after these items are in her possession.  So I went back to the chapel and looked for father.  He was nowhere to be found.  We did have a visiting priest there in community room, so I asked him to bless the medals and crucifixes.  He did the standard blessing.  I asked him, "Father, isn't there a special kind of blessing that is required for St. Benedict's medals?"  He said, "No, I don't think so.  These are blessed, so you're alright."

I looked it up, because I didn't think that he was correct.  There is indeed a special blessing for these medals.  It ends with Holy Water being sprinkled on them.  I remembered that our previous priest had done this blessing when I asked him to bless St. Benedict's medals a few months ago.

This leads me to my question.  Since the medals are now blessed, should I refrain from asking our regular priest to do the special blessing, and just give the medal to my sister with the scapular, when I see her later?  Or should I hold onto the medal and ask our priest to do the blessing?  Is it sinful to ask for an item to be blessed, if it has already been blessed, but not according to the proper formula?

He was an elderly priest, which made me even more confused.  Maybe he was one of the priests who was ordained in the new rite and converted later on.  I don't know.  He was only a visiting priest and he wasn't there to say Mass.  I don't think we have to worry about the Holy Water being real, because it would have been blessed by our regular priest.  I'll hold on to the medal and give my sister the scapular with the crucifix.  I will give them to Father next week and, like you said, I'll ask him to give them back to me after he has the time to do the blessing.

15 minutes seems extreme though.  I found the blessing online and it looks like it should take 5 minutes at the very longest.  Here is what I found:

That is the "new blessing"

The old one, I believe, is much more involved because there are exorcisms said and multiple prayers. It is a long blessing. And no 15 minutes is not extreme, it is time consuming.

What you have listed above is not the same prayer most traditional priests use. Whatever formula that is, is not an exorcism, even though it mentions the word.

Don't St. Benedict medals have to be blessed by a Benedictine priest in order to receive the specific graces that are attached to them? I buy all my St. Benedict sacramentals from Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery.
