  • That I sinned mortally was implied by my first post where I asked what I should do "aside from going to confession" (thanks for giving a specific answer to that, by the way.)
"There's a mix of passion and shortsightedness in me, even when I'm positive that I'm doing my very best to see things for what they are, that warns me that I'll never know for sure. Undoubtedly I must follow the truth I can see, I have no choice and I must live on; but that is for me only, not to impose on others." - Fr. Leonardo Castellani

  • You're welcome. I hope you weren't offended by my post, I am feeling zealous today. If you want to do some additional penance, you could say a little prayer for me, as I shall do for you.

  • What Frances said is good advice. Using public transportation is an extra challenge if you are running late. Maybe take a shower before bed, iron your clothes, have your fare ready in case you do wake up late, do as much as you can sat night.

Under these circuмstances, you didn't sin at all anyways. You never intended to miss mass.

Can someone second this? I never intended to miss mass but carelessly staying up until 3 in the morning on a Saturday (I was listening to ) seems like a violation of the 1st commandment as well as the 3rd.

I would not worry about it.  You were careless and you should have set an alarm to wake up on time.  But learn a lesson from it about yourself, confess it next time you go and move on.

We all make mistakes, we are all careless sometimes.  It's self-defeating to get over-scruplous about this type of thing.  If you really feel guilty, say 15 extra decades (which takes about the same time as the mass you missed) of the Rosary and then forget about it and just make sure to have a loud alarm set for next time.  With a lot of devices like mobile phones it is possible to set a weekly alarm so that it only rings early on a Sunday morning for example.

Luckily my Sunday mass is at 12 noon, so we never sleep that late on Sunday and I have 6 little alarm clocks to wake us us.
