They have a history of attracting hurricanes... Remember Sandy? It WAS Sandy, was it not?

There used to be a fellow who came to town to sell honey who was from Austin. In his own words he said that Austin is a place where morality is non-existent... at all, and one should avoid ever going there if they can help it. Back then I used to wonder what that meant... Today I've seen the answer. That is sad when a person can not be proud to say "I am from this town". Capitol cities seem to tend to be bad places in general anyways.

The effects of Hurricane Harvey are beyond anything ever seen.
Water is 14 feet above previous record levels, traffic lights are submerged. Five have been reported dead so far. That toll will likely rise.
Unfortunately, Harvey re-strengthened and Houston may see another five days of rain.

ABC News reports ‘Unprecedented’ flooding ‘beyond anything expected’ inundates Houston area, at least 3 dead.
    Quote
Houston is being inundated with “unprecedented” flooding after the ferocious Hurricane Harvey set in over the Texas Gulf Coast this weekend, dumping torrential rain on the city with no end in sight for days.
The National Hurricane Center said at least 50 inches of rain has fallen in some areas, and one meteorologist estimated some 340 billion gallons of rainfall inundated the area.
A bulletin said, “This is a flash flood emergency from the Bay City area to Wharton to Waller across the Houston Metro area to Stafford to Friendswood to League City and Santa Fe. Travel across the area is severely hampered if not impossible. Over 1,000 high water rescues have been performed and in some places emergency crews cannot reach the worst hit areas.”
What’s ahead: More rain, flooding, tornadoes
“We are still expecting 25 to 30 inches [of rain] across southeast Texas,” ABC News Meteorologist Daniel Manzo said Saturday. “This is in addition to what has already fallen this morning.”
Catastrophic Floods in Houston, Five Reported Dead
The New York Times reports Harvey Brings Catastrophic Floods to Houston; at Least Five Reported Dead
    • At least five deaths and more than a dozen injuries were reported by Sunday in the aftermath of Harvey, the hurricane that tore across the Gulf Coast of Texas over the weekend.
    • The powerful system, now a tropical storm, pounded the region with torrential rains that were expected to continue for days, causing catastrophic flooding, according to the National Hurricane Center.
    • The public hospital for hαɾɾιs County, which includes Houston, began evacuating patients after flooding disrupted its power supply.
    • The National Weather Service forecast rainfall of 15 to 25 inches through Friday, with as much as 50 inches in a few areas.
    • Emergency responders completed more than 1,000 high-water rescues during the night, and asked the public to donate boats.

I know this location well.  It was my route of going to and from work for three years.   I remember Hurricane Ike
and the streets and freeways  turned into raging rivers and cars floated away.  Lucky the house I was living in
was not to badly damaged. My neighbors home was destroyed by fallen large trees.  The electricity and the
Internet was down for a week.   I am so glad to be away permanently from the Houston Area.

I saw a news report that showed the path of hurricane Harvey -- it went inland past Corpus Christi then stalled and did a U-turn back to the Gulf and they expect it to turn back north toward through Galveston toward Houston and Shreveport.
    .
Since when do hurricanes make two U-turns like that?

  • AlligatorDicax: WHAT!??

What kind of rumors are you trying to start? I don't have a literal bunker here. I wish we did. When I or others talk about the "Catholic Bunker" (the subforum) or bunkering down and whatnot, it's figurative or tongue-in-cheek.

St. Dominic's Chapel is in a regular, modern metal warehouse building that we had built on our property. It's 30x40 with a 12' roof. It wouldn't withstand any blast, and I don't think it would even be good for fallout protection.

I'd also like to quash the rumors that I and/or CathInfo has a solar panel backup system.

I have a small, experimental setup enough to power a fan or a few LED lights for a dozen hours (i.e., I have a 100W panel and a 12V battery) as I'm interested in solar power.

But a full-scale solar panel system was and is out of my budget. Maybe in the future I can get one, but right now we have other priorities like making our house big enough for a family of 9 (and counting).

The biggest problem with solar power here is the fact that our local electric company doesn't provide for grid tie-in. So to use the power, I'd have to buy a huge bank of batteries plus a huge expensive inverter.

I know a lot about solar power, I could design a system myself, and in fact it's one of the things I'd consider doing if I came into some money. But for now, I'll have to be patient.

The server is on a regular UPS though, which would provide maybe 1 hour of backup power...
    .
From the looks of things a fallout shelter would be a bad idea in most of Texas unless you could ensure it wouldn't fill up with water.
    .
One of the things you lose in such emergencies is electrical power, so sump pumps would be unreliable. And waterproofing an underground bunker is tricky business. At some point you have to put in a tower with the entrance at the top so you can get in and come out when the water level rises all around.
    .
BTW why hasn't there been some artificial lakes dug in Texas -- they could serve double duty as settling basins when there's heavy rainfall like this.

No doubt.   I had thought a few days ago about the need for pumps and the vulnerability that they would be disabled at very inopportune times by loss of conventional line power, and that the rumored massive solar-cell array would be reduced to uselessness under thickly overcast skies and nearly continuous rain.

At some point you have to put in a tower with the entrance at the top so you can get in and come out when the water level rises all around.

Yes, assuming that it's a stand-alone mostly-buried shelter.  The escape issue changes if the shelter is built so that it's accessed via a well-sealed basement or even a chapel.   Are houses in inland Texas commonly built without basements?  I thought that from a national perspective, it was mostly us here in shallow-water-tabled central & south Florida who were routinely deprived of basements.  I suppose I should include bayou-intensive areas of the Gulf Coast among the topographically disadvantaged [‡].

If you're above a locally pond-forming elevation, and can watch the rain-supplied flooding pass as a down-hill torrent, such a drenching might provide a useful approximation to power-washing settled radioactive contamination away from a house and shelter, down to a lower elevation.  So the key is not to be among those unfortunates or overly optimistic people who have residential or business property at that pond elevation.

AlligatorDicax: WHAT!??  What kind of rumors are you trying to start?   When I or others talk about the "Catholic Bunker" (the subforum) or bunkering down and whatnot, it's figurative or tongue-in-cheek.

It was my impression that Matthew wanted to put the kibosh on my tongue-in-cheek ramblings [†].  CathInfo being his forum & server, I stifled my creative ramblings.

    -------
N.B. †: I'm capable of devising & extending such ramblings without any assist at all from illegal or misused drugs; I require only a mental trigger and a receptive frame of mind.

Note ‡: I haven't got topographic maps of the Texas coast that I could consult to see how quickly elevation rises inland (as distance from that coast increases).
