I'm thinking of getting a new Douay-Rheims Bible with my $50 Amazon gift card. What have you found to be the best edition, considering things such as paper quality, font size, size of margins, notes flagged in the body of the text, concordance, maps etc.? I currently have the Loreto hard cover edition and find it deficient in these respects.

I recently purchased the DR bible with Haydock commentary. I'm not sure if you're looking for the Challoner or not, but I've been very happy with this.

I own a copy of the book that S2srea linked to and also think it is the best version also. Though I should warn you it is very big.

Seriously, though, if I had that much money lying around, I imagine I'd snap that up in a heartbeat! (Actually, I'd try and beat the seller down a little bit first.)

Back to your original question, though. Sadly, there really aren't that many good options when it comes to buying a new Douay-Rheims. What we really need, I think, is for someone like Oxford University Press to publish a proper study version of the Douay-Rheims, with all of the features that you mentioned and at a reasonable price (although I can't see OUP or any modern publisher willing to do that, at least not without adding a heavy dose of modernism to it first).

As others have said, the Haydock really is the best version of the Douay available today. It would just be nice if there were something more compact and portable along the same lines.

Hmm, that's kind of confusing. The first part of it makes it sound like you're getting a facsimile of the 1633 edition of the Rheims New Testament, but the latter part (Psalms to Esdras. 1125 pages.) makes it sound like you're getting vol. 2 of the Old Testament. :confused1: Whoever wrote that description should probably revise it, methinks.

I think this is the pre-Challoner Douay Rheims which my dad has. It is about as good as one can get, and is chock-a-block full of prima exegesis from the Doctors. Not to take anything from Haydock, yet these are even better. Challoner scrubbed a lot of good footnotes from the original editions, reason unknown. The old type will take some getting used to in the New World, but worth the trouble :-)

True, although I think if you can find the facsimile edition produced by Gordon Winrod (which is probably the one your father owns), it would be much more economical than the version being sold here (not to mention more complete). I believe it was published in three volumes, with the New Testament taken from the original 1582 edition and the Old Testament from the 1635 edition in two volumes.

I can't imagine the quality is very good, though, being a facsimile of a facsimile.

Also, those who have access to the Early English Books Online (EEBO) database through their university or other library can also access it from there. What I REALLY wish was that the original Douay-Rheims would be reprinted by EEBO/Proquest through their print on demand service (just do a search on Amazon using EEBO as a search term). Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be available. Perhaps they see reprinting it as impractical? (I suppose it would need to be cut up into smaller volumes, for one thing. I don't think the print-on-demand service can handle books the size of either volume of the Douay Old Testament [1000+ pages]).
